Does anyone in here deworm their furry friend at home? My puppy friend is almost 12 weeks old (this weekend). He has had his first set of puppy shot and deworm med at the Vet. Everything has been great until this morning at 2:34AM. Depending on how early he goes to bed, he'll get up around 3-4 to go pee and poo.
I took him out for about 30 minutes yesterday. He's been sniffing the grass and licking the street... could he have picked up something bad?? Because I notice a white, rice grain-like worm in his stool. He has pooped again twice since this morning and there is nothing in his stool.
I called the Vet for his followup shot and deworming but the office is closed.
Sometimes you'll see worms in stool after a deworming - when was it last done? I know it's gross, but it's not an emergency. You can wait until your vet is open to address the issue.
I wonder where he got the flea egg from. Could he be growing fleas on his body??
Yes, it is gross. I couldn't go back to sleep after that and I went online to read up on it... I then check his bedding, I saw another white piece (it wasn't moving) but it was soft... on his fur... that freaks me out even more... I've been playing with his this morning and he seems fine... been keeping an eye on his stool for any other unwanted creatures.
K9coach: if he got it from his mother, shouldn't I have seen it sooner? He has been with me for almost 1 month. I know it's foolish but I got it from family who was giving him away.
Katie1: I sure hope so! He has to go in for his second sets of puppy shots so I will make sure to mention it to the Vet.
1: rice grain like worm is tape worm...however wihtout a fecal test youll be treating for worms he might not have or be treating for the wrong type of worms.
2: most OTC dewormers available to the general public are USELESS
generally you wont SEE worms unless 1: they are dead/dying, or 2: in the case of tape, growing big enough to start shedding eggs, so you wouldnt nessicarily have seen them.
if it is tape and just a couple segments then id say he needs to be dewormed specifically for tapeworm (each "rice grain" is an "egg sac")
youll also want to put a topical (or give a pill form) monthly flea preventative, tape is primarily transmitted by fleas and flies.
Pup's can eat a flea off of their mother while they are nursing or snuggling. I have read it takes around 3 weeks from the time the flea is ingested to the time you'd see 'rice grains' in the pup's stool. Hopefully someone with more parasite knowledge can chime in and help us out!
Don't get toooo freaked out. Puppies always have worms of one kind or another. (Isn't that gross?) But as long as you are keeping up with your vet's worming schedule, using the proper preventatives, and having fecal tests done you're doing your job.
