I have heard mix breeds are healthier and smarter than pure breeds. What do most of you think?

Mixed vs. Pure? Some humans are also smarter then others. Two dumb parents (either two or four legged) usually have dumb offspring. Now, that doesn't always happen. But often enough, that you could probably bet money on it and come out winning most of the time.

I've actually never heard that mutts are smarter than pure bred dogs. But it is generally accepted across all species that genetic variety / diversity leads to healthier offspring.

Mixed breeds are not healthier or smarter.

The difference is that we can better predict the temperament and health of a pure breed because we know it's background (assuming you do the right thing and buy from a reputable breeder.)

A mixed breed is anyone's guess when it comes to health and genetic temperament/background.

It is like with people; if you have had 5 generations of ancestors that died of heart disease or diabetes, you can use that information to prepare yourself and your lifestyle and diet for the future. Adopted people often have zero idea what types of mental illness or disease is in their genetics (because they have no "pedigree" or familial record), and often seek out their birth family simply for this info alone.

It is interesting to note that we would consider most humans "mixed breeds" yet humans are still plagued with genetic and environmental weaknesses and susceptibilities.

Is there a database of statistics on the incidence of genetic problems, such as hip dysplasia, PRA, and juvenile cataracts for mixed breeds? I think problems occur for them too, but no one is keeping track/checking for issues like reputable breeders of purebred dogs do.

Mixes won't be as inbred, which you can find with irresponsible breeders. But is a mix healthier than a purebred. I doubt it. It's a matter of preference. I much prefer mixes, but I have a very specific mix in mind, which makes it pretty hard to find what I am looking for...but I'll know tomorrow if I have found our next new family member.

Na, no way would a irresponsible breeder ever breed mutts or inbreed mutts.

Anyway.

Of course purebreds rule.
What did you think I would say?

a mut is no healthier than a WELL BRED purebred...

The line is getting gray now. The general public likes to think a Maltipoo is a purebred. Labradoodles, same thing. I think Cockapoos started it all. They might be wonderful dogs, but the purity of a breed needs to be repsected and continually improved. And the money people get for these designer "breeds" is obscene. Someone told me our lab-shepherd rescue is a Labrashep or a Sheprador. OMG, please. She's a mutt, she's a hoot and she's adorable, but she isn't a designer anything.

And please, don't get me started on teacup breeds.
