A dog's a dog.... they all love their owners, whether they're a purebred or a mutt. Why not adopt one from a shelter and pocket the extra $? Too many nice dogs need loving homes!

Hi beachdiver.
I want a purebred for several reasons. First, aesthetic. I don't think many muts are beautiful. I want a beautiful dog. Just an opinion, not meant to insult, etc. Second, I want to have some idea of temperament, and I want a dog to perform specific tasks well. I know nothing is ever a sure thing with any dog, but my odds increase with a purebred. Finally, I want an 8-10 week old puppy. From what I have read, very very few puppies ever make it to the kill shelter. That's almost exclusively for older dogs. I don't think I'd be saving a life if I bought a shelter puppy. More to the point, animal torture, dogs living a horrid life, etc. that depresses me. But I don't think a painless death via humane and caring specialists is something that will keep me up at night. If someone told me I had a life sentence of living on a chain, I'd be horrified. If they said I had to die a humane, quick death before my natural time was up, that wouldn't bum me out too much.
Thanks for your post and opinions. Hopefully mine don't offend yours, just being honest.
Unless you are showing a dog, spending more than $300 to acquire and fix your puppy seems insane to me. If money is a concern why not rescue a dog and put that $1000 to use on training, high quality food and the inevitable vet bills.
I can't find a larger purebred of any type in the state of Colorado- from a non-sketchy breeder- for less than that.
In fact most are closer to 1500. I'll pay it if that seems reasonable to you folks. I just wasn't expecting it so I had to ask.
Olde English Bulldog, yeah. I understand they have to have a cesarean for each litter, so that is pretty understandable. Maybe some rare breeds...Å arplaninac, Ovcharka, kinds you don't see every day. Maybe if you want to show them...yeah, show dogs can cost.
But for a pet? You'd be crazy to spend that kind of money. I agree to get a pound dog, or if you *must* have a particular breed, check online for a rescue.
If you must have a definite breed, why not contact a rescue that specializes in the breed. Personally, I prefer a pound hound and many shelters could use a hefty donation.
What breed? What is the purpose of getting the dog, example, breeding, showing, hunting?
I want a guard dog for my home who won't get depressed and destructive if I'm gone for 5+ hours at a time on a semi-regular basis. I will show him/her lots of love and attention and offer tons of exercise etc., but I do have to leave for several hours at a time. Therefore, a mutt with, say, border collie in her genes seems like a bad idea to me? But I'm new to this, admittedly.
I have no interest in showing, but maybe breeding down the line if its an option (but not a priority).
Shedding doesn't bother me, I have an active lifestyle but I can tone it down for a not-so-active breed very easily. I'm open to a lot of different breeds, as you can see. I have a smallish/medium-sized fenced in yard as well, fwiw.

Money isn't a huge issue, but it's certainly not a non-issue. Heh. The people offering cheap puppies whom I have visited don't seem like humane or decent people. Harsh and I'm sorry if someone local is reading this and knows who I am. It's my opinion. The conditions were consistently filthy and the dogs didn't seem loved. I don't want to contribute to that.
My opinion on shelter pups I touched on earlier. Thanks for your post.

Thanks. I looked around here but most of the pups that claim to be purebred by the shelters clearly aren't. Maybe I just need to look harder.
