How far did I go to accommodate my dogs?

Over 3,000 miles.

Having promised them during the last of my working years that if they hung in there with me I'd buy them a place with a pond or a creek of their own to go swimming in we had to move from Oakland, CA to VA to find the right place.

They have both a 1/3 acre pond and about 1,000 of creek for their pleasure. Although the dogs that I made that promise to have all crossed over the rainbow bridge 2 of the ones that I have now went for a short swim in the pond this evening, just before dark.

Aaahh - the unmistakable aroma of wet dogs!

Mmmmmm, no. I'd be willing to spend hours getting the dog okay with crossing the bridge....one small step at a time, to get him over the fear. But, I wouldn't carry him over bridges forever.

How far? Oh my goodness. I bought a car for my dogs. I picked out my house for the dogs. I bought a travel trailer so the dogs could travel and still sleep in their own home. I cook for my dogs.

I would carry the dog over the bridge if it were a one time thing, but if the bridge were local and we crossed it often, I would devote the time to training the dog to cross it.

However, sometimes when you are traveling and in a new area, you will find something that frightens the dogs. Or perhaps the dog had a terrifying experience with a suspension bridge that will be difficult to overcome.

I want my kids and my dogs to behave themselves. As long as they do, I will do whatever I can to keep them healthy and happy.

I had to carry my dog in and out the door for about a week after I bought a new door.

I've held an umbrella over him and I got soaked. He hates rain.

Well...I've found that the better the accomodations meet THEIR needs the happier and more managable they are and the happier I am. So my vehicle, housing, yard all reflect that. With that being said I don't really baby any of them unless their is a specific reason such as illness. My dogs have a stock tank to cool off in, get chews to keep their teeth clean but don't have dozens of toys (a few practical ones I incorporate in training but that's it). I am having a window seat built that will specifically work in this house to allow the dog who enjoys looking out the window better access without the footprints on the sill.
Some might think I do a lot but they aren't spoiled. I enjoy them being happy so none of this is really a burden.
I see it just as the responsibility of having high energy breeds.
