6 weeks ago I took my dog to the groomers on a Friday. By Monday her 3rd eyelid was 1/2 closed over her eye.

I took her to an eye specialist and she immediately asked me if I had had her groomed recently and said it was Horners Syndrome. She said they see it manifest after grooming from cleaning the ears.

She gave me drops I can use to dialate the eye but it is not a cure.

Her eye is still bad and it is 6 weeks. The vet said 8 weeks but I am not thinking in 2 weeks it will be back to normal since there has been zero change so far.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this in their dog and wondered how long it lasts.

Thanks

At our vet hospital we had an english bulldog with constant ear infections that developed Horner's. His owner eventually took him elsewhere, he thought they should've been able to get it resolved....he even thought they had it misdiagnosed. As I remember before he left they had been treating it for about 3 months. Our vets wouldn't let our groomers pull ear hair. Vets go back and forth over this issue a lot. He was insistant that it caused so much inflammation that it sets the ears up for infection quite easily. If a dog really had bad ears + a lot of hair, the groomer had to bring it to the vet side and let us do it and flush and medicate the ears after to help with the inflammation. What kind of dog do you have?

This is a new one on me - I'd never heard of Horner's Syndrome. I checked it out and found this very informative article
Horner's Syndrome in Dogs

I hope your dogs issues are resolved soon - and good luck.

I had it in a cat once, after an ear cleaning at the vet.

It didn't harm him... I can't remember how long it took to get over it but it wasn't a big deal.

My dog Henry was diagnosed with Horner's Syndrome about 6 weeks ago which just came on him suddenly, I think they refer to it as idiopathic. I was worried sick about him and some days it looks better than others but some days it makes him look really sad! I was wondering how long it took for anyone else's dog to heal from this.

Default Golden retriever diagnosed with Horner's today.

My dear Sunny, a rescue golden, was diagnosed with Horner's today. I noticed a very slight droop of his right eyelid a couple of weeks ago but he is always running around playing so I didn't think anything about it. Then this past weekend I noticed his head tilting to the right. Today he vet said he still had good sensation on that side of his face and for now we are putting him on antibiotics just in case there is a bacterial cause. I will get the bloodwork results tomorrow. My vet said at the most this typically lasts less than 6 months. This poor fellow had such a rough start in life (severe neglect and no vet care, lost all his fur, underweight, etc.), it kills me that he has to deal with anything else. Please, if anyone has a dog that has fully recovered, please let me know. Or just let me know what happened period. I'm a bit of a wreck, I'm afraid. Thanks.

My dog was diagnosed with Horners a few weeks ago.

We had hoped it was due an ear infection, but our vet told us he would be tilting his head to the side if he had an inner ear infection. Your dog has the classic sign.

You should be glad. That's one cause of Horners that does get better.

My old dog has a different cause. His Horners won't ever improve. The good news is that it's not painful and their vision is still good with Horners.

I certainly hope that my dog's symptoms go away but I am so concerned about your dog also. I am so sorry. My Sunny has appeared to get a bit worse lately, his balance seems to be off a bit. He can still jump on the bed but has difficulty when jumping off and is somewhat hesitant so I try to help him. He appears to be more "lumbering", unsure of himself. I did some research and one source said that 80% of dogs that get this are Golden Retrievers, which Sunny is.
Thank you for taking the time to answer.

My current vet says that my dog has Horner's Syndrome. However, he has always (as long as I can remember) had a slight tilt to his head, but a little over a year ago, he displayed symptoms of a stroke and began to display the other symptoms (drooping eye, small pupil size, 3rd eyelid protrusion, etc) but his right side of his face is also paralyzed. Everything I see says that it should resolve itself in 6-8 weeks, but Hopes indicated that her dog's won't ever improve. Any advice on what the difference is??
