My Buddy is gone.
Something I have learned...no matter how old I get or how many pets I have...this part never gets any easier.

I am so sorry for your loss Steve.

As for the OP...I would keep my dog comfortable until it is time to let go. Don't worry, they will let you know.

Such love, these old dogs. Nothing like it even in the human world. It's just different. His son will now take care of you. Please ensure that he will have someone to take him in should something happen to you, so he isn't left alone during his dotage and last days. It is hard to find homes for old dogs, so it's important to provide for them before you have no choices. Mourn your loss, but be so happy you had such a lovely partner in your life. So sorry for your loss.

My dog is almost 14 years old and I love her so very much but I would never even think about doing that type of surgery on her.

It seems cruel to even think about it.

Our girl is 12. She's a 60 pound mix, and while she's in good health right now, we know her time with us is maybe three more years, if we're lucky.
We have already decided that if a situation arose that would require something serious, like surgery, we would opt not to put her through that. She had a bad time with her last teeth cleaning, and we won't even put her through that again.
We had friends who put their 12-year-old Dalmatian through two surgeries (a tumor removal and then an amputation due to cancer). They lost her in recovery from the second surgery. It was a horrible way to lose her.
Our girl has lived a pampered and spoiled life, and we hope she leaves us in a calm, painless way.
