Been there too many times. They usually pass on the table in a selfish attempt to prolong life....one pup was Casey (14 y/o Yorkie), had breathing difficulties when he got over excited, but always recovered.....one time, he was no recovering....brought to the emergency Vet.....placed in an Oxygen Tent, went to visit two hours later, and he didn't look good.....over the next hour or so, the Wife and I discussed options....called the Vet to put him down....he had just passed of a Heart Attack....never forget how he looked when I visited, and struggled to stand when he heard my voice....I vowed never again to put a friend thru that....once there is a serious issue, and they are uncomfortable, and no hope of quality life, we let them go. Hurts like hell...still miss my boy Frisco who passed 3 years July 8th....had him in my arms stroking his head, saying how much he meant to me....how much he'll be missed, as the Vet gave him his release. Tears...yes, plenty, and getting choked up as I type.
It sucks. Had to do the same with one of mine a couple months ago who battled cancer for 5 1/2 years. All you can do is realize when it's time and do the best you can for them, like you always have and remember the good times.
You are doing the right thing for your dog. It's a pity we don't treat our aging people as well.
