I had the animal control officer from Rhode Island over for lunch and a visit with the two seniors I adopted from her shelter. (The third one was the late Nayla, the "senior escape artist.")
Artie, who I've had for 2 1/2 years, was in her shelter for almost a year, which they really can't afford to do. Lori spent hours and hours trying to help him trust, as he had been neglected and abused. When I took him, he just growled a lot and I took her advice to just act indifferent to the growling. By the end of the day, he was getting his eyedrops without a problem, and he is since then a faithful companion.
He remembered Lori after all this time! He was thrilled to see her, and not a single growl. He looks all sleek and shiny (although she said his face looked older- I guess I can't see it). She loved him so much amidst all the nasty stuff she sees and deals with (and prosecutes). I could not do her job- I'd be a wreck.
She was also happy to see George, a very old fellow with two tusk-like teeth and doggie dementia (barking at corners). He had regained his health, filled out his turkey neck, and got his dog breath addressed by dental surgery. He is also shiny and rolled and rolled in the grass to show his happiness.
I was so happy to be able to support her and show her the results (Artie and George, anyway) of her work. I so want to support all the rescuers in any way I can. I can't do their work but I can write a check and adopt the cream of the crops!
That's awesome that you had her over for lunch! I always look forward to visits from the rescue where I adopted my boy from.
