Today I saw the xrays of the mass behind her stomach. Size of a tennis ball. Biopsy says lymphoma but it's not certain where it's gone. Not in lungs, or liver. May be in lymph nodes around bladder but no other nodes. I see an oncologist Monday. Anyone been there, done that???I am scared to death. She is a shi ztu, 11 but acts like 4, still active, eating, playing, walking a mile every day. Apparantly not affecting her yet, but it's affecting us, I am so sick over this, she has always been such an active healthy dog and still is active. If you know any treatment other than chemo please advise.

I give you my heartfelt sympathy. My Doxie mix was 17 when she got malanomia of the gums, it popped up on a Thurs. and we took her to the Vet on Fri. I thought she had an abcess in her tooth, but when they diagnosed it visually, they told me she had days or weeks, not like a human who gets months or yrs. They said when dogs get cancer it goes to the lungs and vital organs very fast. I couldn't put her down that day, but the Vet said when she stops eating and drinking you'll know its time. By Sat. she quit eating and drinking and Mon. we had to put her down. Let your little girl play her heart out, but think about the quality of life she will have if she has to endure chemo...Don't be selfish at this time, do what is best for her when she's ready, you're her pillar of strength at this time. Good luck with your precious girl.

I have to chime in here..........

I too have a dog that was diagnosed with cancer. He is 11 y.o. Australian Shepherd.
He was diagnosed and given less the 3 months if not treated with chemo. After long conversations with the vet tech (who was a friend), I decided against treatment. The vet said that without treatment, he would die and with treatment there was still slim chance he would pull though. Either way, it had the same end results .

As a previous poster stated, I chose to love and spoil him for his remaining days, waiting for the signs of not eating, drinking and being in pain. Well, its been 2 years of loving and spoiling ! For the life of me, I have no idea what keeps him going. He plays with the other dogs as if he was 2 y.o. himself, and has yet to show any signs. We are and have been prepared for that day, though.

He does have a few lumps that do not seem to bother him. Probably bothers us more.

I had gone through lots of different treatments and expensive vet bills for both his parents (different illnesses/age) only to loose them within 2 weeks of treatment. It was heartbreaking and frustrating for both us and the dogs. So with this one, we chose to let nature take its course, so to speak. And for some odd reason he is still kicking 2 years after diagnosis.

I am so sorry to hear that you and your fur baby are going through this. Ultimately it is up to you.

Just love that baby like there is no tomorrow !
You will make the right choice !
My prayers are with you and yours !

wow what a great story.mine doesnt act like a thing is wrong with her. If I hadnt gone to the vet over her weight, i wouldnt know. She's eating, playing, walking a mile a day. I wish i would find out the tumor is there (which i saw) but not lymphoma afterall. I am going to an oncologist tomorrow who's supposed to be great, but i have made up my mind to no chemo. That's to keep people in tact, not the dog. I can tell mine is already tired of the running to vets etc. She's fine right now, I am a mess, really sick to my stomach expecting the worst. Thanks for that story.

Went to the specialist today. She said chemo would not be a good option for abdominal cancer. It's also in her intestines and it doesnt respond to chemo. She was great, told me about prednisone and how it will give her an appetite to make the next few months good for her instead of starving because of swelling. The steroids reduce the swelling and make her more comfortable. Prognosis is the same but maybe a little longer than it would have been. I hope I last thru this.

Default Brutus and his chemo experience

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. My dog Brutus was a American Bulldog/Boxer mix. He was a very intelligent, fun, gentle dog. He was like our son. He was diagnosed with Lymphoma on 5/8/08. He died from the side effects of the chemo on 7/9/08. The oncology vet kept telling us
that Brutus was doing good, but for the last month and 1/2 of his life he was so sick. I feel like the vet was blowing smoke up our butt to get money. We spent $3500.00 on Brutus in 2 months. I did not care how much it cost I just wanted my Bruti to be okay. I am so sorry that I
put my baby in the care of this vet. Looking back on it now I wish that we just gave Brutus the predisone and let him live his life. The outcome would have been the same but he would have enjoyed what life he had left. If you have any other questions, please let me know I would be glad
to prevent anyone else and their beloved pet to go through what Brutus
and our family went through. We miss him so much, but he is with God now and he isn't suffering any more.
