I think I finally have my 10 month old labradoodle housebroken.
I live in a very heavily populated neighborhood so there are cars going by at all hours and people walking during the day.
The problem is that I don't have a fenced yard so I must take her out on a leash to do her business because if I just let her out, she would run off.
She runs in circles before she poops while I hold onto the leash and spin in place. I have seen people laughing as they drive or walk by. I think it's funny too but several times I got so dizzy that I fell over. We even do this at all hours of the night and in the pouring rain.
Is this just puppy behavior or am I going to have to endure this for life?
I don't like long leashes for walking, but for this, one might be handy! Dogs frequently spin a bit before pooping - I have not the faintest idea why! A lot of time they will wander about a bit just before, as well. I don't know if they are looking for a good "spot", or if they just need to move a bit to keep the gut moving things along in the right direction, so to speak. I suspect it has more to do with getting the gut to keep things moving along.
I couldn't help but chuckle a little. At least you're not having to sing a song to help your pup do her business. lol She's figured it out all on her own with spinning and circling. She sounds like a fun pup.
Too many distractions. Now when she IS Pooping say something like Go Potty & don't forget to Praise. In a few weeks she should Go Potty when you say ....
My 3-year-old male dog almost always spins before pooping. He does so more often when he's in our back yard, though, than when he does it on a walk. But I like it because it gives me time to get out the treats and gear up to praise him. And yes, I'm still housebreaking him!
Were you rewarding her for pooping? Did she have a specific place where you took her? She should go out on a leash so you can make sure she goest to the same spot.
If you reward the dog for pooping, then she will be excited about pooping for you ASAP, because she doesn’t get the reward until she’s done. Eventually you can cut back on the rewards until just getting the “Good Poop!” Will be all that she requires.
