He was very smart, very loving, housetrained easily, but he would become high strung and very fixed on chasing after cars. I kept him on a leash 90% of the time when outside, I made a mistake and let him out of the car so we could dash in the house and a vehicle came by, didn't even slow down and my little fellow lunged at the car and whack, the car flew by and my best friend fell dead, instantly. It has been a day and a half and I don't know what I am going to do. Sometimes he was irritating, but I sure do miss him terribly. I don't know why the heck I am even putting this here, but I think I just need to spew out my guts. I know I have only myself to blame. He didn't like the leash and sometimes I let him off and he loves it, but.....

Well, lesson learned - the hard way. I’ll leave it at that.

There's nothing you can do but allow yourself to mourn. Unfortunately you don't have a time machine, so there's no fixing that fatal mistake.

Let yourself grieve. The process can't be hurried.

((Dustyroad)) I'm so sorry. Losing a dog you love so much is one of the hardest things any of us have to go through.

Thinking of you and holding you both in my heart!

You are DEFINITELY not the only person this has happened to (just off the top of my head, I know at least three people who have had similar moments of inattention with similar costs), so don't beat yourself up too much. Just know what needs to happen with the next dog.

I am very sorry for your loss. It will haunt you for a while - I'm not going to kid you. But you need to put this memory in its place and honor the life your dog lived and be grateful for what he gave you during his life. Trust me - I've said goodbye to A LOT of dogs. For now, let yourself mourn. Appreciate the dog that was and try not to dwell on the feelings of guilt.

Big hugs.

I'm so very very sorry for your loss. I have known times where if a speeding driver wasn't so focused on speeding they saw the dog or other animal and stopped.
