Jenny, 8 year old Boston Terrier, who lives inside and has never seen a tick on has been diagnosed with Bartonella. She was put on Doxycycline for a couple weeks and when vets got test results identifying Bartonella, they added Enrofloxacin. Problem is,she won't eat now and I gave her both drugs last night and she threw it all up. She has always been very sensitive to drugs and we even split her yearly shots up over a couple weeks.
I have tried to get her to eat steak, which up until 2 days ago she was doing ok on. Now she won't eat that. I have tried baby food, all meats, peanut butter and vet gave us a/d critical care food that she won't eat now either.
This morning ,I took 1/4 of Enrofloxacin and crushed it and put it in chicken baby food diluted with chicken broth in a syringe and put it in her mouth. She spit some out. Hopefully she got some of it. I am going to try another 1/4 at lunch time as she hasn't thrown up yet.
Does anyone have any experience with this disease and any suggestions to help me keep my baby alive? I am very worried. She has lost a lot of weight, she is nervous and scared of life so much that I have to force her out to pee/poo via taking her to the end of the yard so hopefully she does her business on her way back to the house.
Please let me know if you have suggestions! Thank you.

If she isn't drinking either I would get her to the vet now! She could become severely dehydrated and may need IV fluids, if your vet is closed go to the emergency vet, please don't wait until Tuesday. I hope she feels better really soon.

I agree with the previous poster...dehydration needs to be treated.

I was totally ignorant about this disease until just a couple of months ago when my son's 4 year old Rottie suddenly died. The dog had been under veterinary care but with no definitive diagnosis. A necropsy told the whole story. Right now, their female Rottie is being treated for the same and seems to be recovering but it's a long haul and we're all hoping for the best.

I wish I had better advice for you...I have two Boston Terriers and a French Bulldog. I feel your panic, frustration and worry over your sweet Jenny. I'm pretty certain the meds can be administered via IV and if that's what it takes, speak to your vet about it. Tuesday is a long way off. Is there an emergency vet in your area?

I'm sorry I wasn't much help but do know I'll be remembering Jenny in my prayers and hope she makes a full recovery from this awful disease. You hand in there with her too and please come back and update us.

I am sorry your pup is sick and hope she gets better soon. You do need to be careful around her, Bartonella is one of the diseases that can infect humans. Fortunately, most humans have immune systems that can effectively defend against it.
