Would appreciate some input. I have taken my bichon (16 lbs.) in a soft-sided Sherpa carrier in-flight on the Canadair jets(USAir) with no problem. The trip is short and he sleeps. He is in the size carrier the manufacturer recommends for his length and height.
This past week I had to go out of a different airport and they wouldn't let me board. They used the "stand up and turn around' rule to mean his head straight up like a periscope. This rule, it is my understanding, is for pets in-cargo as in-cabin pets do not come under the Animal Welfare Act.
I know some folks don't agrree with taking pets and that is fine. But I have made the decision that this is in his best interest to be with me, that he is quite comfortable(he sleeps) and doesn't mind the carrier at all, travels very well and needs no sedation or anything. He can turn around, stretch out and lie comfortably. I take the most direct route. The top of the carrier is a little above his back.
My question is for those of you who do the same thing. Do you have problems? Is it hit or miss? Is there any reason I should not simply forego taking him? I am totally confused since I went without a problem and this time I had a big problem and had to cancel my trip.

Have been traveling at least 5x/yr on average, over the last 8 years with my dog in the cabin, domestic and international. The only problem I've ever had is with Air France (go figure but that is another post) because my dog weighed more than they permit. We were at our connecting airport so we were stuck. I went into a very public display of drama and guess what? She was given a "waiver".

I've only encountered the stand up and turn around with a discounted domestic carrier so I'm pretty sure the guy was new... so to get around to answering your question: it hit or miss.

Yes--it seems so--I was just wondering if your combined experiences seemed to suggest lots of hits and a few misses or whether it was likely to be a miss.
The way things are today it is almost impossible not to get at least one leg of a trip on a connection carrier with the smaller dimensions. Thanks for the input.

From my personal experience, the cuter the dog and the more you coo at your best friend while going through security makes a HUGE difference in how the security people deal with your traveling companion. I know my dog is overweight, but have only encountered two issues, ever. Just go! It has always worked out for me; but I'm not above public drama (even if it is embarrassing to my husband).

You are so right!!!

Last June, we were bring home from TX to CA our then 8 week old 1.8 pound
teeenie yorkie puppy in cabin....

As I was holding her (in the palm of my hand!) through the metal detector, my husband realized we had with us a small bottle of water, and a gel pack to keep her food cold on the plane...both not allowed...

He asked the security people if we could take the water & gel pack on board, since it was for her...

The security woman said in a thick southern drawl....

"Well, suure youuu can.....it's for the bay-bee...come on innnn"
