I have called a few vets in my area to get a price quote for our lab to be neutered and to get 1 dewclaw removed. They are quoting me anywhere from $350-$550. I didn't think it would be THAT expensive.

However, I have heard the humaine suciety is cheaper, but a lady at the vet said they are more dangerous because they don't do presurgical bloodwork, etc.

Is it okay to take him to the humaine society to get him neutered and a dewclaw removed or should I just pay the hundreds of dollars at a regular vet? Do those prices sound about right?

We have a Bulldog and only paid $270, with the blood work. Bulldogs are generally a lot more expensive, too and we live in a major city, which usually means higher costs. I'd keep looking. That sound very high.

We paid about $280 or so for our Keeshond puppy, which included full bloodwork, microchipping (that's like $70 or so), and about five baby teeth extractions. This was in Orange County, CA.

$350 may be correct in your area. Most vets charge for neutering based on weight... so if you have a bigger dog, you might pay more.

If your dog is a healthy puppy, I wouldn't worry about doing the bloodwork too much. Neutering is generally a very easy surgery that most dogs rebound right away from. Some special breeds should have the bloodwork monitoring; we just did it because our vet requires it.

If you feel more comfortable at the vet, try to find a cheaper one. But the humane society's neutering program should be fine if you have an average, healthy, young dog with no specific breed restrictions in terms of meds/anesthesia.

You could always go to Tractor Supply or another storefront of similar scope and buy a cattle-bander and a box of bands. About $40.

It is 300 around here too, unless you use a Valu-Vet, if there are any by you. I took my male to one but would not let them spay a female there. A shame vet care is so $$$$. This is why many people do not spay or neuter, or properly take care of their pets. I say do not get a dog then! Because there will be vet bills in the beginning. Whatever you do, do not go for a cheap spay price. A female spay is a full hysterectomy...painful! It is not a simple procedure like the males have done....a little snip.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I kid, I kid.

I knew a cowboy Parker County who actually did that, however. He had to put the dog down due to gangrene. That's a hard way to save money.
