We recently moved here. And we all love it here, by the way! So, I have tried a few different grocery stores. And was very surprised to have my groceries either A: taken to my car, by an employee, to be put in trunk or B: driving up and again having the employee put them in the trunk of my car. I don't recall ever seeing this done. Is this the normal here? Do I tip? Am I not supposed to help? I feel so flustered. Thanks for any local help, in advance.

I can't speak for Duluth specifically, but certain stores in the midwest do offer 'drive up' or 'walk out' services like you mentioned - and the store I'm thinking of specifically forbids tipping (well, they can't prevent you from doing it, but the employees are NOT supposed to accept).

After growing up with that in Iowa, I was actually surprised to move to the cities where you have to even bag your own groceries....I'm not lazy and have no problem doing it, but I just grew up with every grocery store bagging your groceries and having the option to drive up or have your groceries walked out if you wanted to.

It probably depends on the place, so just go with it when it happens. The places that do that generally hire for a specific position to have that done so it's not like you're taking someone away from something else - that's what they are supposed to do.

I wouldn't tip, just be polite and don't be a pain in the behind.

Thats Mount Royal grocery store you dont have to tip there, I doubt anyone does in fact.

They have a real nice deli and salad bar there really nice in fact

But its sort of expensive store to shop at, but the location is really nice and its a really nice store, we stop there once and awhile not too often though, but we like to do the most shopping at Cub Foods at Central Entrance

Welcome to Duluth its a great town

All Super One stores generally bag for you and Mount Royal Fine Foods has always been considered one of the only "full service" grocery stores in the area. They've always had the drive up service which is kind of their niche (besides a reputation for selling more premium products).

I know back in the day when I would go to the grocery store with my parents around Duluth we frequently had the pull-up-and-be-loaded-up service and there was never a tip required. It seems much of that has gone away, though, because the grocery store we used no longer does that (at least the very times I've visited them since).

Breckenridge Minnesota had a grocery store back in the 70's that had a roller out type of service down a ramp that followed the side of the building, and they would load it in the trunk of the car for you

Dont know if that store is even there any more though long time ago

Really, Super One stores? Which Super One bags for you? I love Super One, but have never been in one that bags for me. That's fine since the prices are good.
Did you mean SuperValu?

As for the stores that take your groceries to your car, it is my understanding that they don't want their shopping carts outside getting beat up (winter can really do a number on those carts!). Plus it seems easier to have someone take your bags outside then retrieving shopping carts. Makes sense to me.

Plaza Super One on Superior St (my closest), Super One Kenwood and Super One at the mall have all bagged for me on many occasions; Plaza does nearly every time. There have been times that any one of those have not, but usually during busy times when a bagger wasn't available.

SuperOne in West Duluth - the usual one we shop at - does NOT bag for you. SuperOne in the Mall Area bagged my groceries the last time I was there (on Tuesday), but never did before. Cub Foods does not bag for you. SuperValu in Pike Lake used to bag for you, not sure if they still do.

BTW, "Bag for you" sounds weird - I just realized it is pronounced the same way "beg for you".
