its either work at hostess or mcdonalds. if these folks want better pay, get a better education. they can quit hostess anytime and work for walmart, and i bet there will be folks lining up to work for hostess.

Why wouldn't you just go find a different job if you don't like the conditions at your current job? There are plenty of people who would gladly do these jobs for the current pay and benefits, and quite possibly less.

Current pay is what they are trying to defend. And a way of life. Unfortunately, that way of life is fast fading. The sad thing is if these workers were doing the work somewhere else, they would likely make so little that they would be eligible for tax payer subsidies. This is where America is in big trouble... Companies are using these subsidies to substitute actual pay and benefits. The product might be a little cheaper, but society pays a much bigger price in the end, while the corporation is the one that benefits the most.

The steel industry consolidated and learned to do significantly more with less. Doesn't require an army of workers to produce steel anymore. That was brought on by technology, and would have happened regardless of union representation. There are plenty of successful steel producers in countries like Germany which have union representation and even higher labor rates. They have no problem finding buyers for their steel around the world. They happen to be much closer to manufacturers in China and Europe, giving them access to prime markets.

It's not like Americans are going to have to work 14 hour days for 8 cents an hour if there aren't unions. Most if not all of the stuff unions fought for back in the day is now protected by the government. These unions have outlived their usefulness by a long shot.

If you don't like your pay or benefits, or how you're being treated, find a different damn job. Don't foul things up for others by striking, it's childish and almost criminal.

There are plenty of people who are just as qualified to do your job for the pay and benefits you are getting. Be happy you have a job. Go to work, do your job and like it.

The laziest and most useless workers I have ever worked with have been union workers.

Is the wage scale all that much higher when you factor in the extortion money these workers pay in the form of union dues just to sit on the bench and wait to go to work? Yes, extortion money is what it is.

I would love to work for hostess. I have a 4 yr degree, and I make 23k/yr without any benefits. I drive 20 miles each way because i cant afford to live close by. im pretty sure whatever their benefits and pay is, its much better than what i make. I dont think it takes much skills to work at hostess, just maybe hard manual labor.

and yes, I am looking to get into grad school within the next 10 years when I save up.

some of these unions today are really killing whatever industry they are in. it makes more sense for companies to go overseas if they cant turn a profit, and the only way to survive is to go overseas, and then the "town" or "community" would get mad at china for taking their jobs. but look, for the last 20-50 years, when that company was here, it did provide them with good paying jobs, a house, food to eat, pensions, etc... but no, the average laid off worker will not remember what good the company did for them or their parents/grandparents.

The sad thing is that the CEO and top management will be fine. They'll still be rich while thousands of workers will be without jobs. I guess it's their way of telling the workers to go screw themselves. It's our way or the highway. In the end maybe it's better if they hadn't gone on strike. At least they would have had a job. Now the workers will be in worse shape. I can see going on strike during good economic times when workers have a little more leverage. It's so hard to find jobs these days, it's best to be thankful you have a job.
