This is foolish. Oh yes their unemployment dropped YAY!

But wait...does that mean their employment went up? Wait..how is unemplyment calculated? Oh yeah-in order to be unemplyed you have to be looking for work. Sooo..what happaned?

Well lets look.

January of 2013, NC. A labor force of 4,773,347 and 4,322,922 are employed, with 453,425 unemployed.
October of 2013, NC A labor force of 4,658,113 and 4,314,502 are employed, with 346,611 unemployed.

Sooo lowering unemplyment lowered the labor force, decreased the number employed, AND dropped the number unemplyed.

Congratulations! unemployment dropped from 9.5% to 8% you accomplished....

Nothing really, in fact you managed to harm the people who WERE employed. There are less people employed in your state then before. The only thing you have done is actually employ less people AND made less people look for work.

Nice job. And the WSJ ignores the fact that less people are trying to find work even as less people are employed.

Is there a coincident that NC unemployment rate has gone down 1.5% since the unemployment rate was cut (National average has gone down only .4% during this time). I say no... Everyone knows a person collecting unemployment with no gumption to looking for a job...until their benefits run out..
Yes -- I even have a relative like that. He actually worked on the side doing odd jobs for cash to supplement his unemplyment checks but when his 99 week vacation was over, he got out and got a job. He didn't even hide what he was doing, he didn't even insist he was really trying to find work, he was happy heading to Florida in those 2 winters so he could be paid to lay around the beaches and casinos having a blast.

Back in the 80s, we got 6 weeks of unemployment in NC. You figured out how to get a job or you moved back in with your parents, or you got a roommate if you couldn't make it after those 6 weeks were up.

Or you took 2 part time jobs . . .

I thought I was in heaven when I was given 6 additional weeks by action of the General Assembly during a recession in the early 80s. I couldn't believe it!!!!

I couldn't find a job so I got busy and figured out how to plant and sell herbs and bulbs from my garden. And I started substitute teaching.

You do what you have to do if you know those checks are going to stop.

I thought it was outrageous -- folks getting nearly 2 years of UE. And I was severely affected by the recession (own my business). My income was slashed down to poverty level at one point. But I sure as heck didn't expect someone to be picking up the tab for me. I had friends out of work who were sitting home playing WoW all day. I said - get a power washer and make up business cards and go powerwash people's decks, siding . . . bingo - a job.

They laughed. Why work when you can get a check for sitting on your butt?

Yes, I know folks who truly suffered and had a hard time getting a job. My husband was out of work for a year - but it was in 2005, so unfortunately, he didn't qualify for 2 years of UE benefits.

I am glad the GA put stop to this slacker attitude. A year was too long.

We had a gazillion people move into NC after 2002 or so, especially the Charlotte area. Hopefully, the reason there are less employed is a bunch of people who moved here and lost their jobs found jobs somewhere else and moved. There were a lot of folks who came with the banking industry, for example (and that includes a huge IT force) -- and they really were not that interested in NC as home -- they were moving for the job. I know some of those folks who have taken jobs out of state and are satisfied with their moves.

So don't trust the stats. They do not tell the whole story.
