To my understanding, usually only large cities can affect the global economy and that smaller towns can only affect the local or state economy and maybe the national economy. I can see cities like NY, LA, San Fran, Chicago have an affect on the global economy.

So would a college town just have an affect on the state economy or can it also contribute to the global economy too?

Not so much the college town as the college. With the high tuition charged to foreign students, more colleges are encouraging them to balance their budgets. When these students graduate and go back to their home country and become productive workers they are contributing to that country's rise in the world market, which could in effect add to the trade deficit and hurt the US economy.

My university is .5% international students. Out of 20,000 students that about 100 international students. I figure then my uni town gives back 1 or 2% to the global economy.

I live in a small town and the majority of the population are on some kind of welfare program. Small towns are more of a leech than anything else.

Recently a small town in Japan had it's nuclear reactors melt down, and the world was affected. Thus I'd say yes.

Are you saying can Main Street affect the global economy more than the commercial districts of the Major Cities? I dont think as much. In fact I dont think commercial districts in cities do as much either. I say the strip mall along local highways have more impact. That is where all the big bad retailers are located.

I guess buying from big boxes like Wal-Mart and Target provide jobs for people in developing nations. So it has an affect, but not the kind I was thinking of.
