Hmmmmm....I'd think that 'isms' have that nice atmosphere initially of hey this is helping us move along ....'prosperously'. Then reality sets in and then the hiccups occur Shen things get to a fork in the road. Either the 'ism' changes and flexes to meet the challenge or things perhaps go 'off the rails'.
In the case if capitalism it probably is only as good as the individuals involved with it. So if they play with laws , distrust, greed, irrationality and the like it reaps the whirlwind. Really at bottom morality is a bedrock of capitalistic economic life. Each and every time capitalism gets a shock can we deny some part of the moral equation is at fault?? And I'd think this would apply to all economic constructs.
Capitalism is an organic system which cannot be tricked, fooled or legislated. Every time it has been mucked with by governments, that government goes to hell and then they blame capitalism.
Capitalism started when the 1st person trades a pelt for food. It is a system of supply and demand. It is the fair trading of two parties which agree on the value of the goods that they are trading.
That's it in a nutshell.
We are living in a period where "crony capitalism" is prevalent.....obama and his regime are neck deep in it. Whether it is using tax payer dollars to buy the votes of the poor, or to buy "donations" from billionaires, "crony capitalism" is a problem.
Who do you think were at obama's Thursday evening fund raiser at $32,000 per person in NY?

Yea, if only government could get out of the way capitalism would be perfect!
I'm about 3/4 of the way through a book called Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson.
The authors present a wealth of information about many nations, over various time periods and how the political and economic institutions shaped the success of failure of those nations.
It is not an easy book to provide a quick summary of but I found a good analysis here and think it worth the time to read this review which runs 13 pages and offers both the pros and cons of the authors main premise. I do think the book itself is worth reading and I'm finding that is giving me a lot to think about and is germane to the subject of this thread.
ps: The book should be available in most libraries since I got it from the little one here in this rural community.
Thanks much for the book title and the review link. I have read the review and I have reserved the book from my local library, and look forward to browsing it.

Let me guess. You think that the mortgage bubble resulted from Barney Frank holding guns to the heads of all those CEOs, forcing them to make bad loans and then forcing them to create all those fraudulent CMO's, DMO's, credit default swaps, and so on down the line ... LMAO!!!!!!!
Funny, I dont remember hearing anything about Barney Frank's involvement in forcing Moody's, Standard & Poor's, or Fitch's to fraudulently rate those derivatives as AAA, perfectly safe for all.
Yea, if only government could get out of the way capitalism would be perfect!
LOL, read a history book please.
Alphamale is exactly correct. Capitalism is a the only possible moral economic system ever invented, since it is based on freedom and trade. The only problem is it does not favor the incompetent, because they have nothing to trade. So they are forced to try to get what they want by taking it because they need it. In other words using politics to expropriate instead of trading value for value.

In other words, capitalism always fails. There is nothing moral about 1 rich man and everyone else ending up dead or fighting over the remaining scraps. That is the end result of capitalism. We don't hold hands and sing kum-bah-ya in capitalism.
Mega corporations control the government by giving money to politicians, and are our fascist overlords. We shouldn't even call it capitalism at this point, as it's closer to fascism.
