I don't feel comfortable with the Boogieman (The IRS) looking over my shoulder at my wallet and smacking his lips. It's harder to make a mistake with federal sales tax and you don't have to be in constant fear of Mr. Taxman taking everything you own over a penny discrepancy.

The wealthy are the ones who pay most of the income tax. I would not be in favor of shifting that burden to the bottom of the income demographic, unless we also did something to boost wages.

You know essentials like groceries aren't taxed right?

Sales tax is a regressive form of taxation. Even with certain things made non-taxable, it doesn't change the fact that it is still a form of regressive taxation policy.

In certain areas, not all groceries are non-taxable... just certain types. Some states (just search for it) actually do tax groceries.

Shifting the burden lower is a high price to pay just because income taxes make a few uncomfortable.

Either way... the government will get its revenue. Its just a matter where it comes from.

I have various investments and I don't find federal taxes hard to file. Quite a bit easier these days with the tools available. If it gets a bit too complex, simply hire someone to do it for you. I do have problems with the income tax system in general but that's a different topic of discussion.

Oh, please, mister Plutocrat. Please take all the money you want. We'll pay your taxes for you and look at you with adoration in our eyes and drool running down our chin.

You want a national sales tax instead of income tax? We'll fight for that for you. You want to do away with capital gains entirely? No problems.

It wouldn't work well. If you exempt necessities, however those are defined, there are too many ways around it. In the early 90's there was a luxury tax on certain cars and yachts. Yachts were purchased outside the US.

Why are you living in constant fear of something that would only happen in your head? If you screw something up, you fix it and move on. Forgetting a 1099 or mistyping your income by a few dollars is not the end of the world.
