If you live in an area without bottle deposits, no reason at all.
However, recycling on any kind of scale has only recently become popular with your average homeowner. Where as, in Michigan, people have collected cans ad bottles for decades and kept them out of the waste stream - because of the bottle deposit.
If you live in a bottle deposit area, and you prefer to just put you returnables at the curb, that's fine - I'm sure there are lots of industrious people who are happy to return them for you and collect the money.
