Seriously? I remember a friend of mine telling me when she was younger, she and her husband used to go without food so their kids could eat. They would tell the kids that mom and dad had already eaten. Her husband was working for the fire department and would later become a fire chief. I assure you, they were not buying beer, dope, tobacco, or lottery tickets.
Then what were they spending their income on, because there is something that doesn't add up there.

The programs are there. Utilize em. I like to know my taxes do go to human life and not to a wall or gunning ppl in a foreign land.
On a side: lost 22lbs when on welfare. Resourcefull as I was, 42$ doesn't get you much a month.

You wait until the Census Bureau knocks on your door. They're always surveying SOME subset of Americans - they do a lot more than the big census every ten years. Back in the '80s they surveyed me on health insurance.
I bet that the reason renters are, in general, fatter than homeowners; their "food insecurity" makes them eat everything that they can stuff in.
I did not do a scholarly study, but I am observant.

Actually, food insecurity does distort the food buying and consumption patterns of many people. When I have extra cash, I stock up on nonperishables because I assume that at some point in the near future I will be broke. I don't stuff it in, I just hoard it for a rainy day.
