Dang. I used to have four or five of these (only smaller) on my refrigerator. Stupidly, I threw them out when my kids started Jr. High school, I simply did not realize I was sitting on a gold mine.
You can go to Google Image Search and type "Cy Twombly Untitled Red."
Yes, somebody paid $46M for it. People buy these things because they know they can resell it later for a profit. It's not because somebody wanted to look at it every day. It's like, somebody a few years ago paid over $7M for a stamp. It wasn't an especially pretty stamp. It's an investment.
For people who think most modern art is silly - from an artistic standpoint, do you even think that's a good painting?
Haha. Looks like they were having a sale on red paint.
Its not my thing but that's true of a lot of things that are either expensive or desirable. At $46 million, the term "bubble" pops into my head.
I also blanch a bit at calling something an "investement" when there's no real expectation on a return. That the item doesn't lose value doesn't make it an investment. I could say the same thing about my craigslist lawnmower. Its something to enjoy.
paintings like that give me hope that my own scribblings could be worth money. unfortunately, the arbitrary decisions of a museum curator can make or break any career.
Once blessed by such a random act of interest, demand for an artists' work could spike when other people "see" the splendor that was not previously visible to them at a much lower street value.
Go to a kindergarten class....you'll get a better deal, and no one will know the difference.
Lol so true. I’m sure us stupid idiotic unwashed masses are all just too ignorant and poor to understand the great beauty and sophistication of... some random scribblings on canvas.
I must be part of the unwashed masses. I’m not cultured enough to understand.
Although, I can’t think of a riskier place to store your millions than this. Maybe all cash in an open vault in the ghetto?
