Correct - the building in the lower left is in France in a jurisdiction where the number of floors is taxed - but a roof is exempt from that tax; the definition of roof is such that you get that style of roof on the top floor.

Maximum height for the top right?

I'm stumped but the church, bottom right.

Nope, but you're on the right track for the top right.

Bottom right is indeed a church... but what is being taxed?

You're not being forced into reading this thread or responding to it. If you don't like the topic, just move along.

Moguldreamer: I will guess that the top right is from an Asian or SE Asian country. Places like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and southern China are full of those shoplot streets. The shops and the living quarters above are owned by families who keep it all in the family.

Typically run by Chinese families, no hired hands in the shops, family members work in the shop and usually for no pay. All of the money stays in the family and they pay for college education for the children who do not want to take over the family business. I know this because I spent 18 years living in Asia and had many Chinese students whose parents owned those shops. Of course, now they are buying up link houses and semi-detached housing for investments.

I will guess that top right is taxed for either square footage of the shop, or for gross sales.

The UK taxed windows in the past. The window tax was repealed in the mid-1800s

Likewise you aren’t forever to respond to my post that have nothing to do with you. The OP a has a history of copy/paste/post without any reference and commentary and it’s nonsense imo

To me, top right looks like taxation is based on width of property. That's how it was done in colonial days in Philly, as you'll see from some of the oldest rowhouses in the city (check out Elfreth's Alley).

What's being taxed?

Real estate. It's like rent. It never goes away and usually goes up. Don't pay it and you'll be moving into the iron bar hotel.

The tax isn't square footage or gross sales.
