Why do teachers act so fake when the principal strolls in? (the ACT, schools)

Why do the teachers portray their classrooms to be in order and to be teaching in a certain style whenever the principal comes in? Then they go right back to what they normally do when the principal walks out.
Are the principals in most schools here in America even aware of what happens when they aren't there?
Are you a student, currently? Then you'd be too young to understand that when your boss walks in on you, you automatically get on your best behavior. It's almost automatic.

Is "fake" the correct word or is "different" the correct word?

I do not change my teaching style when the principal comes in but I'm more aware of what I'm saying/doing and I find that my classes behave differently when the principal comes in so things can be quite different. A class that is normally disruptive becomes attentive. In a class where the students usually ask questions they may be intimidated and not ask questions. I find that the changes in my student's behavior can change the feel of the class.
Just as with the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, the act of observing affects that which is being observed.
I believe that most students don't want their teacher to get into trouble. I find that to be sweet. I really appreciate it when my more (ahem) active students settle down when an administrator comes in the room. On the other hand, teachers whose students feel differently toward them may find that their students misbehave on purpose in front of the principal in order to get revenge on their teacher. I've never had that happen, thank goodness.

For the same reason why you quickly shut off your computer when your grandmother and minister walk into your bedroom.
And, yes, most principals are aware of what happens when they aren't there, just like grandma & your minister know that most teens watch internet porn.

I think you have it the other way around. If and when my principal ever walks in which is rare the kids all of a sudden put themselves on self-lock down mode for some reason and spend more time staring at him then they do listening to me. with that being i said i just keep on teaching. in fact the last time i had an administrator in my classroom for an observation was probably September 2011 and the last time i received an evaluation that had any substance to it was probably 5 years ago.
