Our oldest child will be entering Kindergarten in the fall. Our public school has a half day program. I feel ok with this, though they seem to be craming a lot in the 2.5 hours that they are there. No art or music either. There are private schools with full day Kindergarten, but do 5 year olds need full day? From 8:30-3pm?!
Any thoughts on this? Expereinces with both or either one?
Also, we're considering a Montessori school because we heard very positive things.

5 year olds don't need full day. Working parents do. :-)
I've known people to put their kids in Catholic school because they have full-day kindergarten, which works out cheaper than using public school for half-day K and paying for half-day of aftercare.
That being said, we sent our children to a 3-year Montessori Pre-K thru K program at our local Catholic school and I highly recommend it. The K year ended up being "full day" 5 days a week which was from 8:00AM to 2:15PM.
When I was a kid, half-day kindergarten was the norm (1965-66) and we didn't start reading until 1st grade. But in today's world how are we going to compete with China if 5 years olds go to kindergarten for only a half day?
Thank you. I'm not a working mom but I don't know which is best. We here great things about Montessori. I think it's also more me... Letting my little baby go. It goes by so fast.
Montessori IS great, for some kids and not for all. Look into the curriculum and see if it is right for YOUR child's skills.
In MY area, Montessori kids have a learning curve when they enter public school system. They do not have the skillset previously taught; they are put together with a certain 1st grade teacher that is adept at integrating them into a wholly different learning environment. Some flounder for a while, even with the special attention.
YMMV.

My wife was a stay-at-home Mom until our youngest finished kindergarten. She was Classroom Mom for both boys, which is a great way of keeping your finger on the pulse and staying involved.
If you have the option - 1/2 day. The learning will be compacted is all and unless your child needs special help they will be ready for 1st grade, provided you read to them daily. They need the down time and there is more than plenty of time to go to school fulltime.

Is full day more for working parents? I have no idea what to do. Do we pay for private Montessori? Just put her in 1/2 day K? Our school district is very good. But then our 2nd child will enter a 3's program in the Fall. I don't want to drive to 2 different schools for PreK and K...
