Ok I am assisting a co-worker/colleague of mine who is taking a Puerto Rican and the Law or something like that @ John Jay College in NYC.
She must write a paper for this class and I am paraphrasing however the topic is something like this Puerto Ricans being the first wave of Latino immigrants to NY.... and somewhere in the topic are the words racism & racialism... what has precluded them for acheiving more in this society? Why have they not acheived more than other Latino groups that migrated to NY after the Puerto Rican migration?
The way I interpreted the topic was: Economically, in terms of other Latino immigrants, why are Puerto Ricans on the bottom rung of the ladder of success in America?
Any personal, academic thoughts, ideas or opinions on this topic? Where would she be able to find information that could possible assist with this query? confirm or refute.
If there are thoughts or documentation (stats, or otherwise) that would refute this would also be helpful.

Default Misinformed on Pr Rcns

P.R. is a commonwealth! If you are born there you are a U.S. citizen. You are asking in terms of immigration. It is really saying something that a college age person would not know this-student or not. Especially if they live in NY. I have never seen any kind of info stating that this group is less successful economically than Mexicans, central Americans, Dominicans etc..

This is not where you would post this question and expect to get valid research info! City-data specializes in other kinds of info. This is a place for opinions and occasionally they contain scant facts. Anyone of college age should know this- you have to do the work and put in the time otherwise your information will probably not be accurate!!!
