Brittney Hosac broke the rules.

The code of conduct for cheerleaders at Mesa Red Mountain High School

clearly states that the use of alcohol will result in immediate expulsion from the team.

It seems silly that they don't have a uniform code of discipline for all their extracurricular activities.

I have a problem with schools trying imposing discipline on students for activities which occur outside of school and school hours. They are, in my view, usurping the role of parents and, where required, law enforcement.

Funny, used to live in Mesa, Az. My son would have attended that high school, Red Mountain Ranch had we stayed. It is a top school. Didn't read the link - but I'm guessing the alcohol thing may have something to do with a larger number of the students/families being Mormon.

She and her mother are engaging in classic redirection -- pointing fingers and asking "But what about them?" when caught breaking the rules. Weak.

Buffy knew the rules, broke them, and got pinched. Both rule and consequences were clear. Case closed.

We had this rule in my school district for all extracurricular activities. If you were found anywhere with drugs or underage drinking, it meant being kicked out of whatever activity you were in. It didn't matter if you weren't doing those things.

We had it in mine, too. Even if you weren't drinking, you would be kicked off the team by your mere presence at an underage party where alcohol was present.

The article says that Buffy agrees to the punishment but thinks it's unfair that the athletes aren't held to the same standard. I agree with that. The article says, "we allow each one of our varsity coaches to determine the rules for their squad,". That sounds pretty crazy to me. All students should have the same sanctions IMO.

At my HS, everything hinged on whether or not you were a good sports player. You could get caught snorting coke on the bus while taking shots of jack, but if you were a good player on the Varsity football team, they would slap you on the wrist with a 2 day suspension. If you weren't a 'valued' team member, or on the 'wrong' team (water polo, golf, HS rodeo etc.) they would suspend you and kick you off the team.

I think ALL teams should be treated equally.
