My family and I will possibly be making the move to el paso in early december. I have 2 young children and plan on having more. We like to be outside and enjoy spending time with friends. We are moving from Denver which is such a fun city, I'm a little nervous. I haven't heard a lot of good things about el paso. Just wondering how life is there. Please let me know. I'm interested in good schools and a nice neighborhood. Please give me your honest opinions.

Well I would think the weather here is better. Almost no snow. For some people, it's easier to acclimate to the warm weather than to cold weather - but some people just won't like it here.

I like being outside and that's why I'm here versus someplace that gets too cold - and it's a short trip up to the Gila Wilderness and the Lincoln Forest so here we have the best of both. We have a very short winter - it wouldn't be what you have there in Denver and if you really like snow and skiing, you might not like it here.

I'm a little biased but If I could choose anywhere on earth to live it would be El Paso. It has some drawbacks but many plusses. Skiing isn't that far just a few hours and you can be in Cloudcroft or Ruidoso. The summer is hot no lying about that but you can enjoy the outdoors for 9 months a year before you would get cooked outside. Luckily the mountains of NM are close by and great to beat the heat in the summer. Just to the east out on 180 you can go to Guadalupe Mountains National Park which has peak over 8000 feet. To the north of El Paso you have Elephant Butte which is great for water activities. Surrounding El Paso there are many bike trails and off to the east you have many places to ride 4 wheelers and dirtbikes. El Paso has several skate parks for kids. We also have 2 decent sized malls along with a vibrant downtown area where you can get quality clothes at deep discounts. Entertainers usually make stops in El Paso. Our Airport is small but parking is cheap and you can still get to wherever you need to. The one drawback tends to be wages. However It all works itself out. The cost of living is a little cheaper in El Paso.

I can't think of a single thing you will miss out on by living in El Paso.

El Paso is very much a suburban lifestyle vs a big city lifestyle. The main difference between El Paso and other suburbs is that the majority of people - at every income level - are of Hispanic descent. Most were born here, most are very Americanized, and most are considered white. The city is very free of racial tensions and with only one exception (1 school fight) my kids have not experienced any racial issues.

El Paso has two HUGE drawbacks....extremely high property taxes and hot as hell summers, but I've always liked it!

Had it not been for the really high property taxes, I would have chosen it southern over New Mexico.

El Paso property taxes are higher than New Mexico but I don't believe they are "extremely high" or out of line with other Texas cities. I'm sure someone will correct me. The upside is that there is no state income tax.

Excuse my goof...I meant "over southern New Mexico.."

El Paso taxes are higher than Midland taxes were. Even back in 1995, the last time I was looking at homes out there, the property taxes were around 30% higher for comparable properties.

A state income tax is political poison in Texas, LOL!!

I saved money both on property taxes (a home worth almost 2x as much and larger, with the property taxes slightly lower than what I paid in Midland) and homeowner's insurance.

Same company, State Farm, half of what I paid in Midland.

But property taxes in other cities, such as Austin, are just as high or worse compared to EP.
