If the race is non-partisan and if the husband of one of the supreme court justices (which court ruled unanimously) is supporting someone other than Rahm, I fail to see where politics entered into the mix.

Actually, the law in Illinois clearly states that if one goes to work for either the military or the federal government in a different location, one does not lose residency in their former municipality.
