"As The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, home prices in the United States have sunk to their lowest levels since 2002, falling 4.2 percent in the first quarter of 2011. At the same time, employment growth is stalling, with only 38,000 Americans added to the workforce in May, the smallest increase since September. This compares with 179,000 jobs added in April. There has also been a steep slowdown in the manufacturing sector, and a downturn in the stock market on the back of weak economic news."

Why Barack Obama may be heading for electoral disaster in 2012 – Telegraph Blogs

If the economy stays unchanged or goes further south (you can separate unchanged from worsens in your response) is it possible that the President can suffer a rout/really big defeat in 2012?

Is there anyone who thinks the 2012 election will not be about Obama's handling of the economy?

it all depends on who wins the nomination.

obama right now is the favorite vs. any candidate for a couple reasons.

1. he will be able to raise the most money
2. the public is blaming the republicans for problems now along with democrats. republicans have a house majority, they arnt free from criticism anymore.
3. every candidate who has declared so far has heavy baggage and they are same old same old outside of cain.
4. he will be able to raise the most money
5. if the gop keeps pushing this medicare idea, they will suffer like the dems of 10.
6. he will be able to raise the most money.

Obama isn't going to lose. Any kind of jobloss or lack of creation can be thrown right on the laps of the republicans and tea party who shouted "job creating is #1!" then did absolutely nothing about it once coming into the house. Also shooting down a democrat proposed plan to stop the outsourcing of jobs which is crushing the american worker.

This election is going to be bigger than 2008 in many ways. This is an election where Americans determine what their future is going to be. The Democrats must come up with a sensible plan that cuts the national debt and deals effectively with entitlements. Given recent trends in Democrat policymaking, they will undoubtedly have to incorporate elements that are in the Ryan plan and other plans that are bound to come out, from both sides of the aisle.

I personally think Obama is beatable in 2012 but not wholly. In fact, today I would give him the odds to win, but people are very affected by the economy. And he will have had 4 years to correct this. If it teeters towards much worse, he is done. If it is basically the same as today, he wins.

On a level playing field, Obama would be easily defeated in 2012. However, he had several huge advantages:

1.) He has an insane amount of money for his campaign.
2.) The network that helped get his message across in 2008 is still mostly there.
3.) The media is vastly on his side.
4.) The GOP seems split right now, between the people's choices like Paul and Cain and the GOP's establishment's favorites like Romney. If they nominate a predictable GOP face (which they probably will), they're likely to lose many independents and therefore any toss-up states.

The bottom line will be the state of the economy at this time next year and whoever the GOP chooses to run against Obama.

It's about the economy stupid!

I certainly think the economy needs to turn in Obama's favor for him to be re-elected. I don't think we can simply tred water from here until Nov 2012 and expect Obama to win. The economy needs to turn up and continue up until then, period. If your hoping for a pushover opponent or a even dumber electorate you might as well head to vegas and put your money on a roulette wheel.

Obama will keep every Kerry state from 2004. He's looking good in Ohio and Florida. If Republicans don't win both of those states, they have no shot at taking back the White House.

Obama is looking strong right now.
