Will it be the election-deciding wedge issue like it was in 2004? Will people put gay marriage (fear of or support of) before jobs, taxes, debt, etc?

I'd like to say it won't be important at all. However, the American public never fails to dissappoint on me this issue. It could end up being *the* issue of 2012, even if the midst of a recession and two wars. Look at Bachmann's popularity. Hating gays is her main issue. (She'll be remembered as the 21st century George Wallace, I bet.)

I agree, it would fall into the "very little" category.

Agreed. Given all that is going on in this country it shouldn't be a big issue, but it just might be. Its a wedge issue, one that many people on both sides of the issue are extremely emotional about, that candidates like to exploit. Its not just the right that does it either. In 2008, Obama's pro-gay positions was a huge reason younger voters supported him in such high numbers. It wasn't as big of an issue in 2008 as it was 2004, but it still was a big issue.

Whenever the economy is in the pits, no one cares about anything else.

Really? Many on this board say they won't even consider Perry because of the anti-gay rhetoric in his past. If it was really a non-issue, then this would be a non-issue. Obama and Perry would be judged on their economic record, experience, and policies, and their position on gay marriage just wouldn't matter. But it does! It was the same in 2008, when McCain voters were called angry old white bigots.

The gay issue is such a distraction from real issues facing America.

I've never understood why a person's sexuality is anyone's business...

It's an easy target. When someone makes gays or abortion a big deal you know they don't have anything to offer.
