I believe the mirrors were to be put in low Earth orbit, not on the moon (which is about 200x-2000x further away than LEO, depending on just how low the orbit).
Regardless, of all the other problems and flaws with the idea, I doubt the countries of the world would appreciate the United States eliminating darkness everywhere. It's not like it could be limited to any particular region of the Earth, after all.
It's nice to see a politician who appreciates science. Too bad he has such a weak grasp of it.
I don't know that Newt has a weak grasp of science. He does know the people he talks to have a weak grasp of it, as they do History and the American Constitution. So, he feels free to tell them anything, they will believe it.
Nope, this is not an article from the onion. Newt also suggested that would put mirrors on the moon so that the light from the moon would eliminate the need for street lights. Really you can't make this stuff up.
This is what happens when you vote for someone with no executive experience running anything large like a state, a business, a large city, a large charitable organization or the military. They have harebrained ideas that don't work in the real world and as consultants and/or professors never had to spend money to see them through implementation or deal with problems after they are initiated. They also hire a bunch of academics to advise them who also don't work in the real world.
But, he'd never get the money from anyone in Congress to do harebrained expensive things no matter who was in charge of the House and Senate. I'm more concerned with other things about Gingrich than outlandish ideas.
Why don't we just do what they did in James Bond "Die Another Day" and build Icarus?!
In Iceland, Graves unveils a new orbital mirror satellite, "Icarus", which is able to focus solar energy on a small area and provide year-round sunshine for crop development.
If your going to talk about Newt's position on Space and Science then why not post a link to what Newt actually says instead of a OPed from a left wing rag that's basically just political mud slinging.
I would not expect someone like you to understand the many benefits the Space programs have provided to our country over the decades. Among the many benefits, the space programs provided technology growth, improvement in life technologies and greening of the planet but the list of benefits is very long.
I am all about the space program. HOwever, making the moon look like a disco ball is probably not practical or even realistic. Actually, it is a fairly stupid idea. I don't think anyone at NASA is proposing such an idea.
Yeah, they can and do, all the time. He never said any such thing, just more cut and paste hack job from stink progress or media blathers.
Come on Sanrene it is not just Think Progress or other left publications, Mittens brought it up during the debate. Here is a article where Newt held a press conference and of course a book signing. Here's a teaser :
Quote:
“Folks, I put this thing together for one reason and one reason only, to defend my space policies. Well, that, and to make a little money off all of you while I'm doing it,” stated Gingrich, who pointed at a display of his books while winking. “Mitt Romney told you last night that he isn't in favor of spending any money to built a mining operation on the moon, but what he didn't tell you is how much money we'd be making from that operation. It'd be, like, a gajillion dollars! It would pay off all of our debts and the government would be turning a profit every year!”
I can't wait to watch the new reality show that features the antics of pre-adolescent space janitors.
