Newt Gingrich would get annihilated by Obama in a national election, and I think everyone that follows politics seriously knows it. Gingrich's downsides (extramarital affairs, ethics violations as speaker, inane and racially charged comments during the primary, incredible smugness & douchebaggery) are huge, and Obama has been showing enough faux-progressivism to pull back a lot of the liberals he's lost during his first term. The people in the middle who don't already know Gingrich's record will be running for Obama.
I say this as someone who will vote for neither candidate. It would be a blowout. That said, I'm pretty confident Romney will still be the candidate, because there are enough Republicans who realize that Gingrich can't beat the President.
I do agree dunks, but in 2012 populist mode nation is in, if MR fails to release a decade or more of returns this week, I suspect he'd be a decisive underdog in 2012 as well.
I think BO has done an awful job, but I am expecting a 2nd term more after South Carolina and the tax return question.
Against anyone but MR, Speaker Pelosi and 350 Obama electioral votes are a certainty. MR can, worse case scenario, keep it close and keep a GOP House in the process.
I think Newt would not get destroyed by Obama, and he could make the race closer than some people might think, mainly because Obama has the daunting task of trying to convince apathetic and jaded voters that he's worth re-electing.
Newt getting the nomination would do just that. It would put an end to apathy among fair-weather Obama supporters.

Frankly, I don't think Mitt Romney can win either. As you imply, Mitt is exactly the kind of ultra-capitalist silver spoon plutocrat that is not going to fly in this political climate. Out of touch with the Republican base, and the only candidate that makes Barack Obama, who is something of a Wall Street puppet himself, look like a populist.
I agree that Romney's weakness on his tax returns is pretty damaging, and combined with the Cayman Islands thing, he's basically hitting himself in his Achilles heel.
Add in the facts that Southern Republicans clearly hate him, Christians suspicious of Mormons don't like him, and that a reinvigorated (and probably more well-funded) Newt is probably going to continue to damage him over the race, and he's going to limp into the national election if he makes it at all.
Obama and his administration are smiling right now, I promise you.
Gingrich would not only have to run against Obama, he'd have to run against attacks from within his own party. There are a lot of people that absolutely detest him. He's the only candidate that I could see Republican insiders purposely throwing under the bus, even if it means losing the election.
Out of the remaining options, Romney is the only one left that won't fire up that many hardcore lefties or young people, two less than enthusiastic Obama voting blocks. A Gingrich or Santorum nomination would send those groups running to the polls in fear.
That said, Romney is a deeply flawed candidate. But the economy is bad enough that he might win anyway. Maybe.
No doubt, Obama is smiling, as he should be. I did the same when I used to play tennis at unforced errors. BO's gains in the polls recently are not an improving economy, but rather, the Three Stooges antics of the GOP.
Hillary wisely backed off, and did not destroy BO in 2008, once it became clear she'd come in 2nd. That took maturity, something lacking in this 2012 field.

The economy (the only Republican trump card) is improving...I smell an Obama victory come November
Congratulation to Barack Obama. You're now one step closer to facing the candidate you know you can beat no matter what.
Now the Repugnantcans are truly earning their stripes as being repugnant. Not like they were any picnic before all this, but now they're taking it to a whole new level.
The new theme of the GOP with Swinger in Chief Gingrich leading the charge:
Who knew that Miss South Carolina was the atypical South Carolinan? Maybe some of them don't have maps!
I will say this much. It will be a lot of fun watching the most flawed nominee in living history get crushed mercilessly by President Obama!!
