Elizabeth Warren may have been the first to invoke the "You didn't build that" meme that the Democrats are making a theme this campaign season. In a speech last fall, she said:

"But I want to be clear: You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did."
However, the truth is that all business pay taxes which the government collects and uses for various purposes including "infrastructure", and when goods are shipped over the roads, part of the shipping cost goes to pay the road taxes that the freight line must pay. In the case of air freight, arlines pay "port fees," which are part of the shipping cost that a shipper pays. These port fees are used by the cities to pay operating costs.
Who pays for education? Doe she really think that "we" (the collective) do? Public education, is paid for through property taxes, which businesses as well as individuals pay. Renters do not pay for public education, and as far as I know, college education is still not free, and paid for by the individual.
Police and fire protection is also paid through property taxes, sales taxes, and other local taxes which may be assessed, and business pay these as well.
Businesses are not getting a "free ride," as the Democrats would have you bellieve.
This new theme that the Democrats are using is pure propaganda, and is false. They are trying to gin up a new wave of resentment toward success, and attempting to foster the idea that businesses use the "system" that "someone else" built in order to enrich themselves.
We need to stand firmly against this twisted thinking, which is patently un-American.
Yeah, Scott Brown has a great ad on this very subject. Got something like 800,000 hits in the first day or so. Watch it. Poncahontas Warren doesn't come across to well in her cameo appearance, near the end.
Nothing more than slick political rhetoric in order to distract and appeal to emotion of dumbed down collectvists.
Fact is,government is a parasite, it creates nothing and would quickly die off without the money it steals from its host the productive class.
We've already paid for the roads,the schools, etc. nothing needs to be "paid back", thats just an excuse for them to steal more.

All businesses DO NOT pay taxes.
Moreover, Amazon and Google, as examples, could not have been formed until the internet was created. So, Amazon and Google didn't pay taxes to create the internet because those company's didn't exist -- the rest of us paid the taxes for the DoD to create the internet.
The same thing is true for our roads, canals, airports, justice system, police, etc., etc., etc.
This is the reason the U.S. is a developed country and Somalia is not.
Nobody is claiming that "businesses are getting a free-ride" we are merely pointing out, the obvious, that businesses benefit from the public infrastructure.

It is the people who want to avoid taxes entirely and not contribute their share of the country's expenses who are the thieves.

I think all businesses do "pay back," but she probably doesn't notice because they aren't sending money to the correct organizations — those approved by her!

There was a time when Americans were proud of the public commons that we had all built.
Were proud that in the US we all had an opportunity for an education.
I'm a business owner and I certainly can acknowledge that I could not have built my business without
the infrastructure that WE ALL built. I don't understand how this became a point to argue over.
I would like to hear one single example of a business that grew without ANY use of the public commons.
