What do you think he's going to say in his concession speech? Will he apologize to 47 percent of America for calling them losers and vow to do some soul searching so he can find it in his heart to respect regular Americans? Will he pledge to work with Obama in the future -- even though he does not lead his party and he's pretty much irrelevant to it even as its presidential nominee? Will he announce an upcoming memoir called Wilkie and I: the tale of a hapless liberal who convinced the GOP to run him for a president and lost big? You decide. What do you think Romney will say?
But I will say this -- 2008 saw a particularly classy and honorable concession speech from Senator McCain. Romney would do well to manage as much.
Frankly, I suspect that once Romney has lost and is freed from the need to desperately try and contort himself into something he is not -- a staunch conservative -- he'll at least try and concede graciously and with dignity. On the other hand, given how out of touch he is with normal people, he may well botch that up, despite his best intentions.
In typical Romney fashion, he'll probably say something in his concession speech on election night...and the next day his campaign will issue a press release saying "His position is XYZ even though he said ABC".
"I shall not rule the United States in this lifetime but I will have the last laugh as I will rule an entire planet after my death. Oh..also I have 3 other wives I never mentioned. Thank you and Gordon Hinckley Bless America."
He will try to be gracious but I suspect there will be an aspect of, "You won't have Dick Nixon to kick around any longer." It will be a terrible narcissistic injury to him because it will send a message that basically people don't like him. He isn't so narcissistically defended that it won't register; on a Donald Trump it wouldn't even register consciously before turning into defensive rage, but in Romney's case it will undoubtedly be felt.
Now where are those tearful emoticons? (City-Data has such a crap set of emoticons!)
Lots of good ideas here. I think in his concession speech he should come out and explain what he was really going to do as president. After six years of campaigning, I still don't have the foggiest notion of what he really believes or how he would govern. Is he a centrist who cares about the poor as evidenced by Romney-care? Almost unbelievable that he recently alluded to Romney-care positively, but that's our Mittens. Or, is he a calloused 1 percenter who despises the 47 percent? An earnest Mormon? Or one who disregards the teachings of his church on important matters such as abortion? A Reagan fan? Or someone who stood apart from Reagan as an indepedent? I wish he'd tell us what he really beleives in his concession speech, but as another poster mentioned, he'd just do a rebutal the morning after.
