Mitt Romney: A Liberal’s Liberal Republican : Patriot Newswire

The most prominent candidate for the GOP nomination is former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. He’s a prolific fundraiser and enjoys widespread name recognition, and he’s the darling of the GOP establishment. George Will lists him as one of the few serious presidential candidates.

But should Romney be the GOP’s presidential nominee? The answer is “absolutely not.”

Although there is no “perfect conservative,” and although conservatives have serious issues with every candidate running, Mitt Romney is nothing more than a strident liberal masquerading as a moderate. As Selwyn Duke rightly wrote in 2007, Romney is the Barack Obama of the GOP. Every Republican has made his share of mistakes, but Romney is a committed liberal on the whole spectrum of issues

Its called a Country Club Republican. He is very similar to Reagan when Reagan was Governor of California.

Sorry, but Mitt Romney is nothing like Reagan. How was Reagan liberal?

The only liberal thing about Reagan was his belief that recessions can be defeated by massive government spending, and in his case it worked.

I'm not sure how you figure what he is, since he flip flops all over the place on just about every single issue, depending on what the people in front of him at the moment want to hear.

How about amnesty for 3 million illegal aliens? Does that sound like something that would fly for today's conservatives?

True about flip-floppig for the campaign, but if you look at his past and the values he has held most of his life, it's all liberal.

Thanks for the quote - it proves Bernstein's point very nicely:

Quote:
Today's Republican Party, driven by the Tea Party movement...represents as extreme a shift in political philosophy as any of the radical ideologies that have prevailed in our history. Even Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Jeb Bush, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush are apostates from its ideological orthodoxy
And to the list of those denounced by the Tea-Jacobins now running the party add one more name: Willard M. Romney.

The problem is that, should he win, Romney will face enormous pressure to cave to the extremist Tea-Jacobins. Like everyone else, he's either with them or against them: if he shows the slightest independence, he'll be met with the same wall of obstruction Obama has had to deal with these past four years. But in Romney's case, he'll also face an internal fifth-column movement pressuring him to cave in and do the radicals' bidding.

Is he the man to face them down and stand true to his principles - if he has any?

It would not be popular, but yes, it is something they will probably do again in the future. It is one of those issues they love to talk against, but always act in favor of.

I essentially agree. If it weren't for the Tea Party House I wouldn't be as worried about the prospects of a Romney presidency. Romney has been putting on a conservative act but I do believe he is a moderate. Of course there is no way of knowing for sure what he believes.

I agree with that, on his Massachusetts record.

Trouble is, he didn't run on that during the primary, and he still isn't really doing it now.

I don't know what the hell Romney plans on doing.
