Yes indeed. Only Ross Perot was able to mount a semi-effective 3rd party effort, and he didn't make much of a dent. All others have remained on the fringe.
An independent or a 3rd party candidate has to be able to appeal to enough Republicans and Democrats equally to pull off a majority, and also has to have a ground campaign that is the equal or better of both major parties as well, especially in the critical swing states.
Building the ground game is impossibly expensive for just one person or even a small group, and the ground game requires deep volunteer commitment in large numbers, another very tall order.
Building such a base requires decades, not years, and every volunteer would have to be very skilled in their speaking abilities to convince otherwise contented voters to jump the fence.
We all saw how the abrasiveness of the Paulistas, with their cries of 'Educate yourself!', worked out on this forum. Throwing acid at those who you are trying to woo over is a terrible approach; spreading honey is much better, but a thing the Paulistas were simply unable to do by their nature. I guess they were all hornets, not honey bees. No one wants a hornet nest except the hornets.
