The John Birch Society is about a generation before my time. And yes, it's true the the Tea Party isn't an actual card-carrying organization. I was actually speaking more to the far right ideology that they espouse. These conservative groups keep coming back under different names when there is a Democrat in the White House. In FDR's time they were The Liberty League; when JFK was elected the John Birch Society was founded; during Clinton's tenure there was the Arkansas Project (which admittedly was much more upfront about their goals to destroy the Clinton presidency, which these other groups cloak in ideology); and now we have the Tea Party.

Different names, but with very similar goals and ideology.

I think they are calling themselves the Liberty Republicans now.

One thing Michelle is really good at is causing libby heads to explode.

Libbies spin and obsess about the strangest things, all the while claiming to not care about that over which they obsess. Strange critters, libbies. Scouring the internet for drama and then rushing to see which can be first to babble and yammer about it on forums.

The tea party is the modern john birch society. The john birch society was created by daddy Koch just like the teabaggers were created by his sons.

Both parties have groups or parties, whatever you want to call them, within the party itself.

Tempes: I seriously doubt you were anywhere around duing the hay days of the Birch society, but I was..They are two very different groups...

That's the thing, though, Nita. I can't find any organized left leaning groups comparable to the ones I listed in my previous post who pop up every time there is a Republican in office. That seems to be a phenomena that is unique to the right.
