Quote:
Republican Councilman Kevin Faulconer has defeated Democratic Councilman David Alvarez, 54.5% to 45.5%, to become the city’s next mayor, according to unofficial results tallied by the county registrar of voters. The tally includes all absentee votes and votes from all 582 precincts. Unofficial turnout for the special election was 37%.
Quote:
That’s a big turnout for a special election in a municipal race, which means that the usual caveats about odd turnout models probably don’t apply. The decisive margin of victory might come as a surprise, too, especially against a young Democrat considered an up-and-comer in the party.

I didn't expect the GOP would win this one! 2014 is going to get worse, and worse, and worse, for any politician with a (D) after his or her name.

Also amusing is the fact that King Obama recently endorsed the Democrat loser David Alvarez. Despite that much-treasured endorsement (LOL!) Alvarez still lost by double digits.

Good times!

Hopefully Obama endorses Hillary soon.

From what I read the winner is a center right traditional Republican (aka RINO) and not a venom-spewing, government-in-your-bedroom tea party man. In other words, he is nothing that the wingnuts out there would ever support or should get excited over. It does demonstrate that moderate Republicans can win elections in the 21st century.

your definition of surprise seems to be that you didnt know about it .

San Diego has non partisan primaries and elections. The top 2 vote getters in the primary face off

Kevin Faulconer got 43% of the vote
David Alvarez got 25%

you are surprised the Faulconer then went on to win in the general by less of a margin ???

Talk about a war on women. Dems certainly have a patriarchal, prey on women - literally as well as psychologically - bevy of politicos.

This one isnt as clear cut as the numbers show. Its not unusual for the opposing party to win when a politician from the other party was run out of office.

San Diego is the largest conservative leaning city in California. It's becoming more liberal due to the rise in the Hispanic population but it is still red territory... And Obama won this area because he was the best candidate running for President.
