Is anyone else starting to think we are becoming a nation of two very diferent electorates? With off-year mid term voters trending both more Republican and more conservative among Republicans. And the Presidential electorate really leaning more towards Dems.

Except for 2006 when everything imploded at both ends for Pennsylvania Ave and 98 when Republicans overplayed their hands midterms have been owned by Republicans for the last 20 years. And democrats have won more Presidential votes in 5 of the last six Presidential elections. Part of me attributes this to Republicans just being better voters- forget inspiration, call it a duty and these folks will show up. And when you expand the electorate in a Presidential year that will favor Democrats who draw from a wider net.

But the one question I have is whether or not the ebb and flow becomes self-fulfilling as people are disgusted by the previous election every two years and simply push the other guy over the top. So an R Congress is to battle the Dem in the White House and the Dem wins the Whitehouse because folks aren't happy with the Republican Congress.

The very ignorant and those groups targeted by the Democrats, think there is only one election that means anything.
Who is going to represent the nation as President. And that election no longer has to do with qualifications, it is all about who the TV tells them to choose and if he looks good, like it is the bachelor TV show.

You do not have to choose Democrat or Republican in most states. There are 5 or 6 parties on the ballot in some states for some positions. The Libertarian Party is the 3rd largest & fastest growing party.

Republicans are much more consistent voters than Democrats. The Republican base is older and whiter and those voters would show up to vote during a nuclear attack or a zombie apocalypse. The young voter and minority element of the Democratic base isn't as reliable. They don't vote Republican, but if not properly motivated they might not show up, especially in off-year elections. You pose an interesting question on the ebb and flow. If the GOP wins total control of Congress this year and then goes total Tea Party Ape S*** Crazy for the next two years, it virtually guarantees a Democratic win in 2016. It's going to be fun seeing McConnell and Boehner try to restrain their troops from overreaching, which is roughly akin to trying to herd cats. Pass the popcorn for us, and the Rolaids for them.

Whiplash elections?

No, it's a cycle. Enough new voters age into the electorate, the cycle winds back around. It may take different shape, form, results but it evens out over a lifetime.
