I hear all the GOP candidates talking about how much they're like Ronald Reagan. He's become a god like figure for them. I'd like some people who liked Reagan or not, to talk about his policies. Maybe GOP supporters can talk about how their candidate is like Reagan. Was he a good president for you that lived through it. I'm 34 years old. Not quite old enough to remember. Thanks.
By the time Reagan took office he already suffered from moderate Alzheimer's dementia, he surronded himself with a good group of people in the cabinet, however his positions lead the country to a very highly unbalanced budget, his social agenda resulted in a chaotic situation, the number of homeless people increased significantly, his administration was full of rethoric,
he was fortunate enough that Gorbachev was in power in Russia, which led to freedom and reform and ultimately the end of yhe cold war.
Ronnie "i don't remember, I don't recall" was trash...
how many hundreds of young servicemen were killed in the bombing of the Lebanon barracks? His response? Invae grenada over an airstrip.
scr*w him!
He was an ACTOR...what qualifications does that give him to be governor, much less President?
Sounds like Arnold! Yet, he is one of the most popular Governors in CA history. AND, although it can't happen, he could probably, and easily, be President.
Obama has no credentials to be President. Yet, he has every right to run
As Governor of California, he asked, "Why should the state of California subsidize intellectual curiousity?" Which is another way of saying, "Why should the state support education?"
he was a phony, but he gave great speeches, im sure bush could be the greatest president ever if he wasnt so dumb at public speaking
he didnt have much compassion for people either
"We were told four years ago that 17 million people went to bed hungry every night. Well, that was probably true. They were all on a diet." --Ronald Reagan, TV speech, October 27, 1964
"Soon after, President Lyndon B. Johnson throttled official racism with the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts. Southern whites, led by Mississippi, bellowed in collective outrage in defense of so-called states' rights, and rapidly began to desert the Democratic Party.
And it was in Philadelphia, Miss., at the annual Neshoba County Fair, that Ronald Reagan chose to kick off his campaign for president in 1980.
"I believe in states' rights," he declared. "I believe we have distorted the balance of our government today by giving powers that were never intended to be given in the Constitution to that federal establishment."
His message to Southern whites was intentional and clear: "Boys, I'm on your side."
When he was governor of California and when he was president, Reagan opposed every single piece of civil rights legislation that came his way.
Was Reagan a white racist? I reported extensively on his campaigns and knew him as well as any reporter could, which was, probably, not a lot, and I don't believe he was. But he did what he and his handlers thought was necessary to appease Southern whites. Was that morally wrong? Absolutely.
Is Obama a black racist? Obviously not. In not leaving Wright's church, Obama did what Reagan did—not affront a powerful constituency. Was that morally wrong? Absolutely.
Whose crime, though, was the more egregious? This is a fair question, because Reagan took very little heat from the allegedly liberal media, little from Democrats, and none at all from Republicans for his pandering in Philadelphia, Miss., which was a painful insult to every black and Jew in America. And since then, of course, Reagan has been elevated to something approaching sainthood by the Republican right."

Good lord!! Talk about revisionist history!
His tax cuts led to the greatest expansion of revenue to the treasury in history. More revenue = more people working = more people paying taxes = more companies hiring. However, the DEMOCRATIC congress failed to implement the agreed upon cuts in spending.
Reagan tore the USSR to pieces from the inside out by forcing them to spend huge sums of money on their military. Thatcher (a great lady and leader) was there as well.
