So, it does not appear that George Will is a big fan. I am not what you would call a fan either, but if Trump wins the Republican nomination and is the best candidate on the ballot from my perspective, which in that case I expect he would be, I will vote for him.
Will believes that Trump's nomination will literally destroy the Republican party. He might be right, but if the Republicans are going to support bills like the federal funding bill they broadly voted for last week, then what is the purpose of the Republican party that it is so important that they survive for? Honestly, I don't see one. Let it die already.
George Will is warning that if the GOP nominates Donald Trump for president, it would be the "end" of the Republican Party.
“Conservatives’ highest priority now must be to prevent Trump from winning the Republican nomination in this, the GOP’s third epochal intraparty struggle in 104 years,” he writes in a new Washington Post column Thursday.
The conservative columnist says preventing Trump from winning the nomination should be an even higher priority than denying the Democratic Party a third term in the White House.
“One hundred and four years of history is in the balance. If Trump is the Republican nominee in 2016, there might not be a conservative party in 2020 either.”
It is my sense that George Will is confused and has lost his perspective. The priority should not be the survival or the power of the Republican party, except in as far as it defends our nation's most important values and priorities, which I would characterize as conservative values and priorities.
Pretty clearly, the Republican party currently serves no critical purpose in our society. That being the case, if the Republican party was destroyed, so what? Another party or parties would form and we could start again. As someone who regards himself as a conservative and an independent, perhaps it is time we did that.
So, settle down George. Maybe you are right that Trump being the nominee would be the end of the Republican party. And maybe that would be a good thing.
I agree with you, OP. Ryan gave it all away last week and what is so shocking and sad is how fast and easily he gave in. There was no fight, he just handed over the keys to the kingdom. If that is what the Republican Party now stands for, I say we let it burn and relegate it to the trash heap of history.
I've been hoping the Libertarian Party replaces the Republican Party for years now, but I think even with Trump's potential nomination, the likelihood of GOP extinction will still take some time.
Neither party is looking out for Americans. At one time, it was the democrats who truly looked out for the poor, working and middle classes. Today's democrats fight tooth and nail to protect illegal aliens to the point where they put illegals ahead of the millions of suffering underemployed and unemployed Americans.
Republicans, on the other hand, have been infested with RINOs who are too cowardly to stand up to the democrats and instead vote the same way as the dems so as to not make waves.
It seems that now there are very few differences between the parties---almost like one party rule. Might as well as just call themselves either demicans or republicrats.
Still, OP, I agree---it seems that George Will is confused and has lost perspective. To think that Hillary winning the election is, in Will's eyes, far better than the republican party undergoing a major transformation.
As for George, it is no secret he has no respect for Trump and the feeling is mutual. Trump has said some pretty crappy things about Will, as he has about Krauthammer. Will his nomination kill our party, I certainly hope not. I am not sure how many are really considering how much damage he could do if he did get the nomination. This is one of the many things that bothers me about him and his supporters. Is anyone really paying attention to what he is blabbing about? I hope, what my daughter thinks is the case: a lot of people who claim to be Trump will walk into that voting booth and decide they really can't support him.
Great post OP, you're spot on and George Will has lost his way, like the rest of the so called GOP establishment.
Why do some people think just because we don't think just like you we are wrong? Aren't you being a little self righteous?
Well regardless Merry Christmas to you and everyone else. We are on our way to celebrate Christmas eve and yes, we will probably discuss some politics, between wine, dinner and the kids opening presents.
From the looks of the candidate list, to-date for Republican nomination, I would suggest that the Party is already destroyed.
Wish we could come up with at least a couple of reasonable people to represent us.
Are you kidding? Between Trump, Cruz, Rubio, Carson, Fiorina, Christie and Paul, you virtually have EVERY type of candidate you could ever ask for. Republican/libertarian/independent/establishment/anti-establishment, senators, governors, insiders and complete outsiders. What more could you possibly want? Look at what Democrats have to choose from, now THAT is pathetic.
