Trump tried to draw a direct distinction between himself and Mitt Romney, the party’s 2012 nominee, who would have become the nation’s first Mormon president. Echoing some post-2012 analysis suggesting that Romney’s religion led some evangelicals to stay home, Trump said “religion didn’t get out and vote” for the former governor, “whatever the reason.”
Here in Orlando, he spoke to leaders of evangelical Christian groups, some of whom have privately expressed skepticism about Mormons. Trump stressed his difficulties in the country’s only majority-Mormon state — making an apparent play for support by noting that he has a “tremendous problem” in Utah.
Trump called Utah “a different place” and asked whether anyone in the crowd was from the state.
I'm not sure why Trump thinks that evangelicals would sympathize with his problems with mormons. Does he really not know the history of mormons in america? (Rhetorical question, obviously.)

You're looking at it the wrong way. It's not about sympathizing with him over Mormons, it's yet another dog whistle of "Hey, I'm a REAL Christian, not like that chump Romney in 2012, so you need to get out the vote for me!"
It's such a farce that Trump has won over the Evangelical vote. I mean, I don't vote for a candidate on the basis of religion, but I thought Evangelicals did and yet they swarmed to Trump over people who have a documented history of actual adherence to Christianity and who have actually cracked a Bible and don't say stupid things like "Two Corinthians" when even a non-Christian like me knows that's not the appropriate way to reference it.
This was just playing to the crowd and conjuring up the distrust that more mainline and Evangelical Christianity has had for the Mormon religion.

There is along standing belief that Evangelicals stayed home because of Romney. It's not true but it shows how weak his campaign is becoming.

I'm glad you are right up front about saying that Trump will violate the First Amendment! That is "the law" Trump would have to repeal to get rid of the separation of church and state. Funny how righties think the Constitution begins and ends with the Second Amendment.
And Hillary is far more of devout and religious Christian than Trump can even imagine. This has been well documented and only a fool would attempt to pretend otherwise.

Preachers should stick to religion, should they choose to become involved in politics let them pay to play like everyone else.
