Funny up until the early 20th century all a European had to do to be an American was to pay boat fair. If you were of Northern, Central, or Western Europe it was open borders that permitted immigration. Purchase a ticket and arrive and you were in. No visas, no application, no skill tests. But you guys know that. Your white ancestors were no diferent then illegal Mexicans except you sailed the Atlantic.

Actually, one of my ancestors worked at the entry point in Boston, back.. oh, about 150 years ago. A ship came into port, with an orphaned baby on it, and nobody knew what happened to the parents. He took the baby home, raised her, and she ended up marrying one of his sons. So, I guess, all these generations later, I must be an anchor baby!

Hillary said that America is a nation of immigrants. When in fact America is a nation of Americans.
There is no nation named "America". This country is actually "The United States OF America". Realistically, the appropriate term for a person born in the USA should actually be "United States-er" or something those lines, not "American". America is the landmass, which had actually been named "America" before the USA had ever been formed.
So were mine- 190 and 120 years ago, respectively on both sides.
Every person who's not a continental native is a child of immigrants. How long our ancestors have lived here is only a matter of blind chance that none of us had anything to do with.
So 'time in' counts for nothing. What matters, and the only thing that matters, is we are American. Through our birth or by our conscious choice.
Personally, I admire the person who risked all to come here and take his chances in a new land that's largely unknown to him and little understood. And stays. And becomes a new citizen.
That takes a lot more gumption, courage, and guts than simply being born here does.
I admire people who respect our country and our rights as a nation enough to obey our laws and wait until they are invited to enter. I admire people who believe in the rule of law. I admire people who don't impose themselves upon others.
Most criminals are willing to all to get what they want at the expense of others. It's something most criminals have in common.
OH MY GOD! The brown people are com...*sigh* oh, nevermind.
First of all --- are you that ignorant that you believe all illegal aliens are "brown people"? First of all, there is no such race as "brown people". Not all Hispanics are "brown people". How bigoted of you to make that assumption. Let me educate you---Hispanics range from blonde-haired blue-eyed people to dark skinned black people. Second, there is no such race as "illegal alien". In the past, ICE has deported illegals back to 189 different countries. 189 different countries covers every race, religion and ethnicity.
I don't care where in the world an illegal alien comes from. Nor do I care if they got here by sneaking across the border or overstaying a visa. They all have one thing in common and that is this --- they have no business being here.
Well, my parents are immigrants. Not hundreds of years ago like yours, but in the 1950s. My parents followed the law to get here. People like you disgust me. You have zero appreciation for the rule of law or what it means to be an American.
Odd..Banjo Mike said nothing about supporting illegal immigration--his post was about those who have the guts to up and leave all their familiar surroundings on what is a crap shoot..a new country..and a new culture.
Immigration is not bad thing..done legally--as your parents did. Tell me, what do you think your parents would think of your stand against immigrants?

That's not true. They didn't automatically get American citizenship when they landed on our soil You apparently, don't know American history. People who arrived then were considered to be LEGAL aliens until they went through and passed the process to obtain American citizenship.
Also, not everybody who was processed through Ellis Island was allowed to stay. Many were put right back on the boat that brought them here.
Immigration laws were different back then. Those who went through Ellis Island were obeying the immigration laws at the time. It's despicable that you try to say that it is the same as illegal aliens who sneak into our country or overstay a visa.
Why were "skill tests" needed in that time frame? Many Americans were illiterate. We were largely an agrarian and industrial society. People who were illiterate and unskilled could easily find work. It's not like that anymore.

Exactly! Legal immigration is a good thing..BTW--all refugees are here legally..like it or not.

banjomike!
& a question for the 'time in' folks:
How do you measure the 'time in' for those who identify as present day Confederate-Americans? After all, they threw it all away, & then ... found assimilation challenging.
