I'm not surprised. I was in Mississippi in February and the racial tensions there are ridiculous and I didn't even visit the Delta, that place has the worst reputation.
In MS blacks don't like whites, whites don't like blacks, everybody hates hispanics. Customer service was a pain in the behind, both blacks and whites were unfriendly. When I was arriving I saw a vandalized road sign, the Mississippi confederate colors were painted in black. I thought oh no, it's really as bad as they say...
