If Trump is elected as President I am really curious about how far he would be willing to go to suppress the speech of his opponents. He's already talked about changing the Constitution to allow easier litigation of the press, so we know that he's willing to go there. He seems to be extremely thin skinned, as anyone who has ever defied him has learned to their chagrin - so it seems this could be a theme of his administration.
Does anyone think he'd be willing to use the power of Presidency to try to stifle the speech of his opponents? It worked for Joe McCarthy, at least for a while. If you are a Trump supporter, do you think that's a good idea?
If he followed the practice of liberals he would. They are the leaders is speech suppression and shouting down opinion that is different than theirs. They don't burn the books like used to be done. They rewrite them for indoctrination use in schools to teach anti American ideas. It has been effective. They may have been able dumb down over half the population.
It's time for conservative students to take a knee in the classroom and universities.
I believe he'd try. I don't believe he'd get anywhere.
Agreed, I think he'd try, because the Radical Right core supporters will demand it. They've been working for decades to establish their New Republic, and this will be their golden opportunity to secure it into the future. Free speech and a free press are a demagogues's worst enemy, and I predict Trump will try every machination possible, either within or without the law, to suppress opposition.
He has certainly said that he would by 'opening up the libel laws'. Remember what happens to journalists in Russia and we KNOW how Trump loves Russkies.

He'd have a tough time instituting political prisons inside the USA but I can assure you that he will try everything in the book to accomplish that. Go back and look at what Joe McCarthy was able to do - he destroyed many lives during the his anti-Communist witch hunts. And a President has a lot more power than a Senator. Trump and McCarthy have one thing in common, they both had the same mentor - Roy Cohn, who taught them the politics of power and control through fear and intimidation.
Trump wants to be a dictator not a President. He certainly will try to dismantle most of our freedoms. Corporations will have the most freedom to polute our air and water. All in the name of profits for the 1%....

It was conservatives who burned books, not liberals. Further, no liberal has threatened to curtail freedom of the press--as Trump has done. Nobody's "indoctrinating" students with "anti-American ideas." This is all paranoia.
He'll give it his best shot, as well as jailing those who oppose him.
