Glad to see Alabama voters see through the smear tactics and dirty tricks of the filthy Democrats. Hopefully the lead holds. The last thing we need in the Senate is another far left liberal like Doug Jones.

One would expect Democrats to do well in a state as blue as Virginia is, plain & simple.
Nobody expected the Democrats to nearly wipe out what had been a two-thirds GOP majority in the House of Delegates. However, even after the biggest Democrat delegate swing in modern times in this month's election, the GOP will likely retain the majority that it's held continuously since the last year of the Clinton administration. The state Senate has been in GOP control for most of that time, too. One doesn't have to look far back to the last time when Republicans had all the state power in Richmond (House and Senate majorities, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General) -- it was only five years ago. Interesting times back then, with the bill that was kicking around in the Senate that would have required a transvaginal ultrasound prior to getting an abortion. It caught some minor attention in the national media, and Governor McDonnell's initial support of it likely damaged his chances of being picked as Mitt Romney's running mate.
As for the gubernatorial race, that can be chalked up (in part) to Virginia's propensity to vote against the party in the White House in the year following the Presidential election. The 2013 race broke a streak that dated back to the 70's of VA doing this, but it took a combination of extraordinary factors for it to happen (namely, the GOP changing the nominating procedure and putting forth a weak slate of candidates for Gov/LtGov/AG in a convention rather than a primary, and an exceptionally strong performance in the general election by a Libertarian candidate). The 2017 race was more of a return to form. In key suburban areas, Gillespie woefully under-performed his own numbers (by as much as 20 percentage points!) from his narrow US Senate election defeat in 2014. Not much changed in that time except for the POTUS (and Ralph Northam wasn't particularly any stronger of an opponent than Mark Warner was, except possibly in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore, due to his roots there).
VA is potentially blue for one simple reason. NoVA. (the federal worker) It grew significantly under Obama. The rest of VA is like the rest of the SE.
Actually Richmond, Norfolk/Virginia Beach and Charlottesville are also Democratic leaning metro areas outside of the Washington suburbs that contain a large part of the state's population. The heavily Republican areas in the south, west and rural parts of Virginia are outnumbered and growing less than the state as a whole.

Very true. Its a shame, too, how these leftists move into VA in large part because of how Republican/conservative governments' work to make the state more affordable (lower taxes, fewer regulations and red tape, etc.), only to vote in their fellow leftist brethren who will go the opposite way, thereby making the cost of living in VA more expensive. They're like locusts, bringing destruction wherever they go.
