He didn't get to be a Rhodes Scholar and go to Oxford for nothing... he is very intelligent by any standard.

Still, I think it is subconscious. And I he may have done it to Gore too. He cannot endorse without a subtext of "but, we all know the perfect president has already come and gone... me!"
