And good luck dealing with higher taxes, more welfare, and illegals.
What's so bad about a stronger public safety net? Lets assume you get severely disabled, blind and can never work again. Lets say you have several children depending on you. Is it really horrible that you and your children actually have a public safety net to rely on?
"Democrat Linda Belcher won a deep-red Kentucky seat, the 37th flipped since Trump's inauguration.... Trump won this district by 50 points. Linda Belcher just took this Kentucky House seat by 36—an 86-point turnaround."
I don't think many are saying there hasn't been change, but so far they are are state wide elections and not national. It could be a trend, it could be short lived. We will see in about 8 months. It was, like most of these have been, a special election, which usually have a very poor turnout. This could be one of the reasons. Who knows?
1. This is a district that is somewhat Democratic downballot and the Democrat who won the seat was the previous officeholder who narrowly lost in 2016.
2. This was an open seat because the Republican committed suicide after allegations he sexually assaulted a teenager became public and the GOP candidate running for the seat was his widow who had some deranged conspiracy theories.
3. While I don't think this particular seat can be used as an example of momentum for November, I do think there has been enough other state Special Elections the Democrats have won in Republican seats to suggest the Democrats certainly have momentum. If it will hold 8 1/2 months from now remains to be seen, but this is the type of stuff we saw leading into the Democratic wave in 2006, and the Republican waves leading into 2010 and 2014.

As others have noted, Linda Belcher's Republican opponent was the widow of the previous office holder, who took his life recently after being accused of child molestation. Belcher had held the seat previously, is a teacher, and is well-respected.
This area is not noted for having an influx of illegally voting aliens. Kentucky uses computerized voting machines in its elections, and voters must produce a photo-I.D. and sign in prior to voting.
Also left out of the early claim of victory is the fact that Belcher almost won this seat in 2012 (53%/47%), won the seat on 2014 (53%/47%) and lost a squeaker in 2016 (51%/49%) before winning the special election with 3,386 votes (roughly half the off-year votes she received in 2014).
The take-away is Democratic state primary voters showed up and Republicans didn't...congratulations.
FTR, it means nothing.
Over the past four elections, the Democrat has averaged 301 more votes than the Republican.
Moreover, Belcher seems to have a strong history in the district, probably a great organization and is likely indistinguishable from a moderate Republican.
Her opponent was the widow of the guy she lost to in 2016 and appears to be a political novice.
I am a Kentuckian. I strongly suspect that there will be a record turn-out of Democrats in November. People who were indifferent to politics prior to this administration are registering and declaring they are determined to vote.
Kentucky is a conservative state, but enough is enough. Many are turned off by Trump's adulterous womanizing, his provable lies, and by what is being uncovered by the growing investigation of his campaign. Yes, of course there are the MAGA-hat-heads who will never be swayed - but thinking people are seeing more clearly just who Trump is, and they do not support his corruption and the resulting endangerment of our country and our democracy.

well, what makes you think there will be a much bigger turn out for Dems than Reps other than this is normally the way it works in off year elections? As for the investigations, all we know is Russia tried to interfer, but at this time, it doesn't appear Trump had anything to do with this. Now. I think before any of us start pointing fingers or assume anything we should wait and see what really comes out of all this.
Womanizing, does look like our president took lessons from many presidents before him. Or do you really think this is strictly a Trump activity?
